Every now and then a music video transcends the shackles of mere clip-dom and becomes a bonafide relic of motion picture history. When you watch this week’s Feature Video from Gorillaz, you will be witnessing just that.

‘The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God’ is a short film spanning three tracks from the band's latest album The Mountain, featuring hand-drawn animation from London-based animation studio THE LINE. Directed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett alongside THE LINE’s Max Taylor and Tim McCourt, the film was made across 18 months and thousands of artist hours. Reps from THE LINE explain “we tried to compose shots in the same way they would have in the animated feature films of the 60s... All the backgrounds are hand painted, but for many of the shots we adopted a hybrid approach, mixing real watercolours with a digital polish and final paint.”

The clip features Gorillaz’s iconic virtual band members 2-D, Russel, Noddle and Murdoc in the jungles of India for an adventure to discover what lies at the top of a mysterious mountain. Despite all the whimsy of the cartoon adventure, the eight-minute film explores loss through the lens of Eastern philosophy and reincarnation, making it a very personal project for Gorillaz creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett following the recent deaths of both of their fathers.

“We needed a solid reference. Do I got my son, who looks like he grew up in the jungle. I bribed him with Pokémon cards…” Max Taylor from The Line animation studio and director with Tim McCourt and Jamie Hewlett of Gorillaz’s first animated short film talks about using his six-year-old son as a reference for the videos opening sequence of a young Noodle exploring her jungle home.

The short is now available to watch on YouTube! And check out my full interview with Taylor and McCourt on AWN.com and at the link in my story!

So here's the theory: they died and arrived in the jungle (paradise). Then they decide to reincarnate, which means they'll have new lives without each other, so Noodle says she loves them before reincarnating. So beautiful 🥹. And so, Gorillaz started a new life on Earth. Will they meet together again? Who knows!

Thst being said, I think this video is not meant to be taken literally, they are just acting in this story to represent the narrative of the album: a more optimistic way to see death, and reincarnation. Masterful video. Thank you @hewll and @thelineanimation

“I think Jamie would be so happy to hear that people think it’s reminiscent of Apocalypse Now,” says Tim McCourt, one of The Line’s founders and director on Gorillaz’s #TheMountainTheMoonCaveandTheSadGod with Jamie Hewlett and other The Line founder Max Taylor. “There is always some brightness and darkness in the world of Gorillaz. Jamie loves both of those genres of films and tones, and I think that kind of stuff will come out when you’re trying to bear your soul. And he really did that with this film.”

Riddle me this… What do you get when you combine the vibrant but eerie jungle atmosphere of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 Apocalypse Now with the water-color wonders of hand-drawn, 2D cell animation from the 60s? You get Gorillaz’s first short film: The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God.

Produced by Kong Studios and animated by The Line, The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God features Gorillaz’s virtual band members 2D, Russel, Noddle and Murdoc as the four meet up in the jungles of India for an adventure to discover what lies at the top of a mysterious mountain. In the process, they brave lustful snakes, white-bearded snake oil merchants, glittering caves, and mysterious canoe-riding gods with bloody teeth. The eight-minute film explores loss through the lens of Eastern philosophy and reincarnation, serving as the visual centerpiece for the virtual band’s upcoming album, The Mountain.

The Mountain, The Moon Cave and The Sad God – named after the album’s three central tracks – is now available to watch on YouTube and AWN chatted with The Line’s team to discuss the short’s real watercolor paintings and rostrum cameras as well as digitally recreated xerox line work that pays homage to Golden Era techniques through a distinctly retro visual language.
