I’m joking these the homies and I ended up assisting for the day to help keep the project somewhat on schedule. Was a fun day out in the heat but this the shit that I miss about my days back in Denver use to always just pop out and randomly help a homie by filling in colors or something. There was so much community. Wish I could recreate it. Until then this what we doing. Who got a wall I can crash next? 👀 #justwiththeassist

Our first herARTside Retreat is complete and WOW y’all. As an organization, it was so filling to see you all come together to rest, create, chat, laugh, SLEEP, smile, connect, be in sisterhood/people-hood-just be YOU. This was certainly one of the most intimate events we’ve hosted, and we will venture to say, one of the most impactful. Thank you for joining us with your AH-MAZING energy, your kindness, your openness (we know we had a lot of introverts-kudos for doing this) and just sharing space with us. We will figure out how to do this offering again next year, somehow, some way. There will be professional footage that will be shared soon but just thank you, this is why we do the work.

So many thank yous are in order: @calltoresist -thank you for believing in the work to provide 20 WOC Artists an opportunity to rest and create. Airbnb thank you for providing a beautiful space, food and massages for our artists to rest in luxury and space they deserve. @inspired_therapies , @sunshinegreyskies @Maxx thank you providing very intentional offerings for the participants to enjoy. 🎨 Introducing Studio Artist Maxx Valentine!

Maxx is one of five new artists joining Tempe’s Studio Artists Residency this year, bringing her creative practice into classrooms across Tempe Elementary School District.

A Phoenix-based artist and muralist, Maxx creates bold, playful work inspired by Black culture, anime, pop culture and humor. Her colorful murals celebrate identity and make room for characters and stories that aren’t always seen in traditional art spaces.

Through the residency, second graders will get to learn and create alongside Maxx, exploring new materials, ideas and ways of making through art. Vibrant mural artwork depicting a face with surreal floral elements, a monarch butterfly, and rainbow accents, announced as part of the Studio Artist Resident Program.

MUCHAS GRACIAS POR TODO! I’ve been reflecting on last night and can’t tell you how much it meant to me to see everyone show up and show your support for my work. It turned out better than I could’ve imagined and I feel truly lucky to be apart of this community.

Thank you for all your kind words throughout the night and for treating my mom like your own. I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect but I definitely felt the love.

Special shout out to my mom @durazoterry for flying out and helping me set everything up and maintaining throughout the night. Thank you to @centralartsmarket for the opportunity and to @tumbleweedflower for all your support and for putting up my tag. I could go through a whole list of everyone who continues to support me and that’s a blessing.

The show will be up through October 10th and I’ll post when I’ll be in the gallery so if you missed last night, you’ll still have a chance to check it out!

Standing in front of this incredible installation by Maxx Valentine felt especially meaningful. I still remember our first meeting at Fair Trade Café, right across from where this mural now stands. Seeing the work in person was amazing, but honestly, the part that left me most awestruck wasn’t the visual art itself…it was the story behind it.

There’s something poetic about that. Hearing Maxx’s story was inspiring to me, and now seeing that journey expressed so boldly in a public space feels like a full-circle moment.

It’s also a reminder that you never know who is watching, learning, or drawing inspiration from your path. By being your authentic self, pursuing your purpose, and sharing your story, you’re giving someone else permission to do the same. Representation matters because visibility matters. Stories matter. And the impact you have on others often reaches further than you’ll ever know.

So keep showing up as yourself. Someone behind you needs to see what’s possible.

And if you haven’t experienced @maxx.vart work yet, make plans to attend the opening reception for Maxx V’s solo exhibition, “This Is Me” at @chicartistrystudio (222 E McDowell Rd, Suite 101) on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 6:00 PM–9:00 PM.
