Today in Arkansas Territory history - October 13, 1827 - 199 Years Ago - Lovely County was a county being formed that existed from October 31, 1827, to 1828 in the Arkansas Territory. IIt included all or part of present-day Benton, Washington, and Crawford Counties in Arkansas plus all or part of present-day Delaware, Mayes, Wagoner, Cherokee, Adair, Sequoyah, and Muskogee Counties in Oklahoma. The county seat was Nicksville, established on April 25, 1828. The town was located on the west bank of Sallisaw Creek, thirteen miles (21 km) from its mouth. The town was named after General John Nicks, a hero of the War of 1812, and mostly consisted of log buildings. The post office was discontinued on October 2, 1829, with the buildings of Nicksville being later purchased by Dwight Mission. The county had three townships: Nicks, Hope, and Prospect. The Territory designation of Lovely County was approved Oct. 31 of 1827.

On this Day in Fayetteville History - October 13, 1895 - 131 Years Ago - The 1st telephone service in Fayetteville began with W.W. Gladden and W. B. Bentley formed the Fayetteville Telephone Company. Lola Ellis (sitting) and Maggie Jackson were the first telephone operators in 1895. Another photo of Ellis in the 1940s or 1950s shows her at the switchboard. There were 72 original subscribers (and thus 72 different numbers) for the exchange. One customer digit was No. 13 - he didn’t want that number, so William N Gladson took it at as his own number. It’s Happy Birthday 🎈🎁🎂 for the guy on the left - my friend, my all time favorite Mayor and a great supporter of the guy on his right - who on this day 13 years ago called him by name, hugged my friend and posed for this photo much to the shigrin of two Secret Service Agents telling us there would be no photos. Well both these guys always kept friends and the public first over protocol. Happy Birthday Lioneld Jordan!!! today the city will honor Lioneld at 3 pm naming the annex behind city hall the Jordan Annex and birthday cake too!
