Free Clinics: The Past and the Future of Psychoanalysis
FREEPSY CONFERENCE

A three-day interdisciplinary conference organised by the FREEPSY Collective - online and in person in London, UK

How do free psychoanalytic clinics question and expand the horizons of what psychoanalysis can be and who it is meant for? This conference is dedicated both to the legacies of historic free clinics and to contemporary work done by free psychoanalytic clinics around the world. We start from the premise that psychoanalysis needs to be placed in the context of political movements, of feminist, anti-racist and anti-colonial politics, and in the context of class struggle.
We invite psychoanalysts, psychosocial researchers, historians, patients, activists, artists, and anyone else interested in the history of free and low-cost psychoanalytic clinics to join us in thinking together about the horizons of what psychoanalysis has been and what it could become.

The conference is organised across six different strands or ‘spaces’ plus a Living Conference Space, detailed below, and is designed to give voice especially to collectives who have not yet been present in FREEPSY events, or to themes and angles that have not yet been discussed.

This conference is part of the FREEPSY Free Clinics Festival November 16th – December 6th 2026, London. Please check the FREEPSY website for other events of the festival, which include workshops, talks, mutual interviews, book launches, archive conversations and art exhibitions, held in several locations in London, including The Freud Museum.

btw, sorry if my ‘colourful, traumatised ND experience expresser’ needs a sensitivity disclaimer - in this insensitive world - but @screamingmedusa is one of the only things connecting me to the outside world.

in the last 3 years I have cut out about 95% of my friends, family, even goddaughter due to the shame of my tormented state 🐍 and my therapist said it would be a good ‘release’ in order to #survive.

Here’s what that communicates, plainly and without judgement:
• Prolonged exhaustion - hair mats when someone hasn’t had the physical or mental energy for routine self-care.
• Stress + insomnia - disrupted sleep and constant tension often show up first in hair and posture.
• Withdrawal inward - people under sustained stress often stop tending outward appearance because all energy is going to coping.
• Not neglect, not chaos - it’s a functional sign of overload, not a character statement.

Importantly:
• Matted hair does not signal instability.
• It does not imply risk or danger.
• It does not undermine credibility.
• It does align with what clinicians, advocates, and safeguarding professionals recognise as burnout / trauma fatigue.

In other words:
It reads as someone who has been carrying too much for too long, not someone acting out.

Anyone with basic humanity will understand it for what it is… Really???

This utterly essential protection from being traced is NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED on the ICO’s website. I don’t even think they know what its significance is to tell the truth.

Maybe they need an awareness campaign?
