Leah and Fiona are holding onto a tree on Christmas Eve night. This is the tree that contains winter, and we're all sideways and upside down on its branches, in its acorns, by its side and taking shelter from the rain. It's not an oak or hawthorn or dogwood. It doesn't resemble the trees we grew up with, and no one ever taught us how to climb it. We still did, but it took a really long time. There was no guarantee we'd make it to the top, and some stayed forever lethargic in the middle. But it was my purpose to push everyone, so I spoke their names all aloud and made them feel important. Strength can't be purchased, it just has to come into your body from the land. But how are we supposed to manage the rest of our lives after what we've seen? Every day there is no hope, and then poof there is hope. We love our city so much, it stings. Never be cruel, never leave without kissing bye bye, never go into the bottomless pit. So many lessons still to collect.

A reading of “Epitaph,” my poem written in memory of my late Grandfather Robert, who I never got to meet, at Bloomers Poetry Club on 2/19/26 in Northeast Poetland, Oregon. Split into three parts because Instagram video posting blows and because I am nothing if not a Verbose Woman.

This was my first time ever presenting creative work in a public setting !! Thank you to everybody who attended for listening to my words and to Judy for putting on these endlessly enriching events (my fav thing happening in town rn!), for believing in me, for inspiring me & pushing me to write again, even when writing is hard. It is my greatest honor to Bloom with her, and to Bloom alongside you all 💚
