Africa makes films, but where can we see them?

When we talk about film distribution, there are two different problems we need to look at: access and monetisation.

That leaves us with two questions:

#1 Where can African audiences actually watch African films?

#2 And when they do, how much money actually comes back to the people who made them?

That’s what I look into in the last edition of my newsletter.

A legacy is never built in a single moment. It is built in the values a family chooses to protect, the promises they choose to keep and the courage to carry a vision forward.

In 1974, Gilani’s began as a small family supermarket in Nakuru, rooted in integrity and service. More than 50 years later, that same spirit lives on through three generations; growing from humble shelves and sacks into a business that reaches communities across Kenya.

This is more than a family owned business. It is a generational calling built by people, sustained by trust and carried forward with purpose.

At Salt Hub, we believe the most powerful stories are not just told, they are truly felt. We are so grateful to have been entrusted by Thisile and the entire BCB team with capturing and sharing the Gilani’s story: a story of family, courage, purpose and the enduring power of a family legacy.

The ads we remember most have one thing in common: They felt like us.

During the Jury Panel at Marketing X Live, the conversation turned to something many marketers and creatives have noticed:

📺 Advertising used to be part of culture.

The characters.
The catchphrases.
The shared experiences.
The moments everyone talked about.

The most memorable campaigns weren’t just selling products they were tapping into real cultural truths that people instantly recognised.

So the question is: How do we create work that is culturally relevant and still delivers business results?

Because when brands understand culture, they don’t just capture attention.

They create lasting impact.

🎤 What happens when you put Kenya’s Cannes jurors on one stage?

At Marketing X Live, Zizwe Awuor Vundla, Gil Kemami, Mbithi Masya, and Maurice Wangalachi, moderated by Serah Katusya, took us inside the jury room and behind the work.

Not just what won.

Not just what was shortlisted.

But the ideas that sparked debate, challenged convention, and demonstrated the power of creativity to drive real impact.

As Kenya continues to gain recognition on the global creative stage, conversations like these help us move beyond celebrating the wins and start understanding the thinking behind them.

Because the future of our industry won’t be shaped by copying great work.

It will be shaped by learning from it.

Kenyan creativity is proving it can compete with the best in the world. In the last two years, Kenyan campaigns have achieved the highest creative honours at both a regional and global level… from Tusker’s Loeries Grand Prix to Kenya’s first-ever Cannes Lions Grand Prix.

But what separates good work from work that wins on the world’s biggest stages? At Marketing X Live, you’ll hear directly from the people who help answer that question.

Join Zizwe Awuor Vundla, Gil Kemami, Mbithi Masya, Nelly Wainanina and Maurice “Rizz” Wangalachi, moderated by Serah Katusya, for a rare behind-the-scenes look at how world-class creativity is evaluated.

Together, they’ll unpack:

✔ The work that deserved to win
✔ The ideas they fought hard for
✔ The campaigns that almost got overlooked
✔ What marketers, agencies, and brands can learn from the world’s best work

This is more than a panel discussion.

It’s an opportunity to understand how creativity becomes a competitive advantage and what it takes to create work that delivers both cultural impact and business results.
