The triangular-shaped state-owned green space at First Avenue and 36th Street across the street from the St. Vartan Park garden has long been closed to the public, to the frustration of many community residents.⁣
⁣
St. Vartan Park Conservancy has been leading a campaign to open and steward the space, which has been locked for decades (petition link in bio).⁣
⁣
Last week, with knowledge that the MTA paved over the rare slice of East Midtown nature, the Manhattan Community Board 6 Health, Education and Environment Committee called for MTA Bridges and Tunnels to appear at the committee’s October 8 meeting to answer questions about any future plans for the parcel and to discuss opening it to the public.⁣
⁣
The space is now being used through 2029 as an MTA Bridges and Tunnels storage area for work associated with the adjacent Queens-Midtown Tunnel, the project’s locally based contractor, Navillus, informed the Conservancy.⁣
⁣
The St. Vartan Park garden, inaccessible to the general public for decades on city land, is now open to all. The Conservancy has offered to steward the green triangle at no cost to the city or state if the public space is opened to the public.

“For as long as I’ve been living in and organizing in Greenpoint the number one complaint I’ve heard from constituents in eastern Greenpoint is the dangerous truck traffic that comes illegally down our residential streets…we have dangerous trucks that really pose a threat to our collective life and safety. What @nyc_dot has finally proposed is a plan to actually make our streets safer.”

A huge thank you for these powerful words and the support of our Councilmember Lincoln Restler. @lincolnforcouncil has been with us every step of the way in this fight. His recognition of all of our work and the urgency to make streets safer around PS 110 and McGolrick Park means so much to all of us.

“Now we have two and three year olds coming to PS 110, we have 500 kids and their families coming twice a day crossing these dangerous streets and every day that goes by is allowing these kids to pass through these places with known deadly dangers.”

It has been one week since dozens of neighbors showed up to Brooklyn Community Board 1 to speak in favor of critical street safety improvements around PS 110 and McGolrick Park. We are so thrilled that @nyc_dot will be starting work soon. It cannot start soon enough! Today we’d like to share some sentiments from @chrisroberti, Greenpoint dad and PS 110 Safe Streets Committee organizer.

We could not be more excited to announce that after 5 years of advocacy the @nyc_dot is *finally* starting to implement our safe streets plan for eastern Greenpoint!!!

Our community has suffered for too long from traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths brought on by speeding cut through traffic on our residential streets. The space around McGolrick Park and PS 110 ought to be the safest in our entire neighborhood and it just has not been the case.

We all helped will this plan into existence, our dogged advocacy, our consistent presence, and the hard work done by so many. Special thanks to our elected champions @lincolnforcouncil @gonzalez4ny @emilyassembly @bkbpreynoso @rep_velazquez @senatorjuliasalazar and @ohlukeson for carrying our message to those in power. Special thanks to every one of our partners in McGolrick Park and the immediate area @ps110pta @mcgolrickdogs @nbkmutualaid @mcgolrickpark @nbk_ta @nbkopenstreets @mcgolricknights @mcgbirdclub @nbkparks @northbrooklyndogs @evergreenexchange @downtoearthmkts @nbkcompost and so so many more.

The work will begin in the next few weeks on 3 new crosswalks, 16 hardened daylit corners, 2 new slip lane closures with an additional 5,977 sq ft of public space for eastern Greenpoint, and 2 diverters that will stop cut through speeding traffic that has put our park, our school, our homes, and our families in danger for more than 70 years.

We’re looking forward to getting this plan in the ground, seeing how it works, and continuing to build on this progress in the weeks, months, and years to come. Together we have done something amazing and it is only just beginning.

We’re excited to team up with our fellow park groups at McGolrick Park, Tompkins Square Park and WNYC Transmitter Park to introduce Park to Park — a new way to bring park communities together for some fresh air, connection, fun and well-being.

The free Park to Park experiences — just a ferry ride away — begin Saturday, September 26. The day features a Harvest Moon gathering hosted by @mcgolrickpark at the Greenpoint green space, with music, learning, park beautification and more as we celebrate the start of fall.

Jump over to @mcgolrickpark for more on the September 26 festivities.

Stay tuned for more from Park to Park, including what’s coming to East Midtown.

Another school year is right around the corner and as the PS 110 Safe Streets Committee begins it’s *sixth* school year fighting for the safety that all of our neighbors deserve here’s a refresh on who we are and what we’re all about!

Eastern Greenpoint deserves safer streets and more beautiful public spaces and over the last five years we’ve been advocating for a community plan to achieve it. We’ve hosted dozens of community visioning events, woke up early for 40 Bike to School rides, presented and gained the support of all of our elected officials and more than 500 neighbors, and won some real investments for our community.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited for the year ahead. It’s our hope that 2026 is the year that @nyc_dot finally moves forward on a larger safety plan for the streets around McGolrick Park and PS 110.

But in order to make it all happen we need you! Are you a parent whose child is entering PS 110 this year? A family who has seen our efforts and cares about our community? A neighbor who has been looking to volunteer to make our streets better and more climate resilient? If yes then comment, message us, show up! There is so much good we can do together and so many good things to come.
