City of Dance — Koyaanisqatsi June 7, 2026 Tongva Park Set within Santa Monica’s sculptural landscape of gardens, overlooks, and winding paths, Tongva Park is an intersection of civic space and coastal ecology. For City of Dance, five choreographers — Dimitri Chamblas, Madeline Hollander, Benjamin Millepied, Jamar Roberts, and Pam Tanowitz — each created a response to a section of Philip Glass’s score for Koyaanisqatsi, forming a single work that reflects on velocity, modernity, and imbalance. Presented by @parisdanceproject and @ladanceproject with support from the City of Santa Monica. MADELINE HOLLANDER 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒍 𝑫𝒊𝒂𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔 Madeline Hollander's (@mchollander) 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒍 𝑫𝒊𝒂𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔, presented at this year's summer festival re-articulated the 45-degree angle embedded (choreographically and compositionally) throughout Robert Wilson and Philip Glass's 𝑬𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉. Drawing on the opera's repeating diagonal choreographies and scores, and on the triangles that run through its scenography and original sketches, Hollander takes the motif as a blueprint for new movement trajectories that invert the original axis points: up and down, as opposed to stage right and stage left. Seven performers held a continuous state of ascent and descent, putting into motion the tension between Einstein's four-dimensional spacetime and quantum nonlocality, the theory that unsettles it. Performed by: Morgan Amirah (@morganamirah), Antuan Byers (@antuanbyers), Evelyn Dugan (@evelyndugan_), Marieles Garcia, Salma Kiuhan (@sa1mita), Cori Kresge (@corikresge), and Marius Chemin. Co-curated by Noah Khoshbin and Sasha Okshteyn (@sashaoksh). Produced by Sasha Okshteyn. Photos by Maria Baranova (@photo_by_baranova) + Chloé Bellemère (@chloeblm)

What you don’t see in this video is all the stuff happening beneath the surface. 💛 Penny has SELENON-related myopathy, a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy. In so many ways, she looks like a typical 9-year-old. But there are also a million little ways her muscles make everyday things harder, and most of them aren’t obvious to the people around her. Swimming has been one of those things this year. Penny would love to jump into the deep end. She would love to swim completely unassisted. She has taken lesson after lesson and works incredibly hard, but the muscles in her core, chest and neck simply aren’t strong enough to reliably keep her head above water. And at 9, she notices. She notices when other kids can do something she can’t. She notices when she needs help. She notices when she feels different. There are so many other things you don’t see, too. You don’t see how tiring it can be just to sit upright through a day at school, especially when her feet don’t reach the floor and her core has to work overtime. You don’t see the nights interrupted by BiPAP alarms when her mask leaks, or all the work that goes into keeping her breathing safe while she sleeps. You don’t see the challenges around eating and gaining weight, or how it feels to be so much smaller than almost everyone else in your grade. There are a million little adaptations we make to help Penny navigate the world. And, alongside them, a million little moments when she is reminded that her body works differently. But you also don’t always see the determination. This girl keeps getting back in the pool. 💛 And today we’re sending this video all the way to California to Max, another child living with SELENON-related myopathy, who wanted to see an example of another kid with his condition swimming. That’s one of the beautiful things about this rare-disease community: our kids get to see that they aren’t alone. So this swim is for you, Max. 🏊‍♀️💛 And to anyone living with a disability that isn’t always visible: we know there can be so much happening beneath the surface. We see you. 💛 rarediseaseawareness #invisibleillness #musculardystrophycanada #adaptiveathlete #resilience

Working with Madeline Hollander @mchollander on this new dance commission for The Watermill Center was a dream. ⚡️🔦Madeline was invited to reimagine Robert Wilson’s seminal work “Einstein on the Beach” for its 50th anniversary since premiering in 1976. “Parallel Diagonals” presents a dimensional re-articulation of the iconic 45-degree angles embedded, both choreographically and compositionally, throughout Wilson’s “Einstein on the Beach.” The piece draws inspiration from Wilson’s and Lucinda Childs’ repeating diagonal choreographies and scores, as well as use of triangles within the operas scenography and original sketches. Hollander uses this motif as a blueprint for constructing new movement trajectories that invert the original axis points: moving up and down, as opposed to stage right and stage left. Parallel Diagonals features six performers in a continuous state of ascent and descent - exploring, through movement, the ongoing tensions between spacial relativity, Einstein’s introduction of 4D spacetime, and its defying theorem, quantum non locality. Performed by Morgan Amirah, Antuan Byers, Evelyn Dugan, Marieles Garcia, Salma Kiuhan, Cori Kresge & Marius Chemin Scenic Design: Flavio Pezotti Costume Design: Flavia Ruggeri Sound Design: Thorsten Hoppe Supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Photos by Chloé Bellemère, Maria Baranova, BFA

A still from Madeline Hollander’s COUNTDOWN (2025), a new performance commissioned by Kelly Wearstler. Staged within the 1934 James Dolena–designed pool house, the work transforms the site into a live mechanism for measuring time. Eight performers move in looping aquatic sequences, their gestures tracing the logic of anticipation and return. Drawing from Busby Berkeley’s kaleidoscopic choreographies, Hollander reimagines his language of synchronized spectacle as a spatial study—less cinematic fantasy than temporal architecture. Filmed from above and from the ground, COUNTDOWN exists between cinema and performance, imagining choreography itself as a system for keeping time.
