“It’s really important to do what you love even if you aren’t getting paid for it. Writing music with all my friends and touring around the country in an econoline van and sleeping on floors was what I loved, and working at coffee shops and the video store allowed me to do that. It didn’t make me less of a musician and I met a lot of dear friends and collaborators in those places. That’s good to keep in mind if you are starting out as a composer as well. If you are working other jobs to make your music, you are still a composer. If you are writing music you are a composer.”

Happy birthday to one of the greatest songwriters of all time, the legendary @dianewarren ✨✨✨ It was such a joy to meet you, celebrate with you, and discover what a kind, big-hearted, and humble person you are. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your big day. And as far as I’m concerned, there should be an Oscar sitting on that piano for every one of those 17 nominations 😎🏆

When the Academy announced its new members this summer, Diane was actually the person who delivered the news to me! She messaged me to welcome me and tell me I had been invited to join the Music Branch before I had even seen the press release. I will never forget that ❤️🙏

Thank you, Diane, for your music, your humour, and your enormous spirit. You are a true legend and a huge inspiration. Wishing you good health, many more songs, many more rescued animals, and above all, happiness ☀️❤️🎵

P.S. I took an Uber to the Academy Museum the following day, and my Uber driver’s name was Oscar (see last photo in the carousel). That’s one hell of a coincidence and one hell of a sign 😎🎵✨🏆 #IDontWantToMissAThing

Introducing this week’s JMH 2026 LA Workshop Guest Composer Heather McIntosh @mcintoshhhh ✨🎶

From her early days playing alongside The Elephant 6 Collective, Gnarls Barkley and Lil Wayne, to recording with luminaries like Animal Collective, Norah Jones, and St. Vincent, Emmy-nominated composer Heather McIntosh’s musical career is rich and varied.

Her impressive credits boast collaborations with directors like Craig Zobel for the projects ‘Compliance,’ ‘Z for Zachariah’ and ‘One Dollar’, Riley Stearns for ‘Faults’ and ‘The Art of Self-Defense,’ Astra Taylor’s ‘Examined Life’ and ‘What is Democracy?’ Rodney Ascher’s ‘Ghost Boy’ and Susanna Fogel’s “Cat Person” and “Winner”. Heather’s versatility shines in her original scores for documentaries such as ‘Hal’, ‘Sheryl’, ‘Counting Crows: Have You Seen Me Lately’ and ‘Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool’, all directed by Amy Scott. She received the New Music USA Reel Change Grant for her upcoming orchestral score for Dash Shaw’s animated feature UNKNOWNIA.

She is an alumna of The Sundance Institute Music & Sound Design Labs at Skywalker Sound, a Sundance Institute Time Warner Foundation Fellow, and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, The Recording Academy, The Television Academy and Co-President of the Alliance for Women Film Composers from 2023-2026. She continues to advocate for diversity and excellence in the industry.

Retour sur la présence de MIM’S au festival Sœurs Jumelles à Rochefort ✨
Un festival au croisement de la musique et de l’image, où se rencontrent compositeur·ices, réalisateur·ices et acteur·ices de l’industrie audiovisuelle autour des questions de création, de narration et de collaboration artistique.
Pour MIM’S, être présent dans ce type d’événement, c’est avant tout participer aux discussions de l’industrie, prendre part aux échanges professionnels et continuer à rendre visibles les compositeur·ices racisé·es dans les circuits de la musique à l’image.
Ces moments permettent de rencontrer des artistes et professionnel·les aux parcours variés, d’écouter différentes expériences et de confronter des visions de la création et de la production musicale pour l’image.
Merci aux initiatives qui participent à faire évoluer ces environnements et à ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives : le Lab des Femmes @lelabfdc , Troisième Autrice @troisiemeautrice , AWFC @theawfc , @lecollectif5050 et Girls Support Girls @girlssupportgirlsparis . Des structures et collectifs qui contribuent, chacun à leur manière, à enrichir les récits et à élargir les places dans l’industrie.
Un immense merci à @rosesalomelagaillarde Rose Salomé, Neary Mam @nearymam et @iamjuliegayet pour leur invitation, leur confiance et pour avoir donné à MIM’S l’opportunité de prendre part à ces échanges et de faire entendre sa voix.
MIM’S continue de se construire dans ces dynamiques de dialogue, de représentation et de transmission, avec l’envie de renforcer les liens entre les artistes et de faire exister davantage de voix dans la musique à l’image.

Today we’re opening the archives once again to share another never-before-seen exclusive from Don’t Bother Wearing Seatbelts.

This time it’s Circulatory System performing “Joy” live at the @octagon_arts in Ames, Iowa.

Honestly… we could all use a little more joy right now.

This performance is absolutely epic! Reminding you just how special Circulatory System was… not just in the studio, where they created some of the most beautiful and adventurous music of the @elephant6_recording_company but as a live band capable of transporting an audience somewhere else entirely.

Even more remarkable, this concert took place in the gallery space at the Octagon Center for the Arts, one of the only live performances ever held in that room. It made for an intimate, almost dreamlike setting that perfectly matched the band’s music.

On this tour, Circulatory System was joined by Pipes You See, Pipes You Don’t and The Instruments, making for one unforgettable night in Ames.

We’re honored to preserve and share moments like these. We hope this performance brings you a little joy today.
