NEW EPISODE: 154 - Captaincy, Complacency, & Earning the "C" w/ John O'Sullivan Most captains get the "C" for the wrong reasons. Best player. Most popular. Loudest voice. Then complacency creeps in and the culture cracks. John O'Sullivan [@ctgprojecthq] is the founder of the Changing the Game Project and co-host of the Way of Champions Podcast. His new book with Dr. Jerry Lynch, Captain: The Athlete's Guide to Being an Exceptional Team Leader, gives athletes and coaches a playbook for building leaders on purpose. Tex and John break down why leadership is a skill, not a trait. They also dig into the best player trap and what happens when your star gives 80%. Why trying stopped being cool. Why influence is never neutral. How to name the dragons in your locker room before they burn it down. And why the strength coach may be the best person in the building to teach leadership. NEW EPISODE: 153 - Buddies Become Brothers: Build a Team for All Seasons of Life Every team ends. The great ones change shape instead. After three Captain's Workshops in four days, Tex stayed in Boston with his college co-captain. They had been apart for seven years, and it felt like no time had passed. That trip sparked this episode on the most overlooked stage of team development: Adjourning. Sports don't teach lessons. Coaches do. So teach this one. Build the bond now, so it holds later. What you'll learn: - Why teams that skip hard conversations adjourn as strangers - The difference between healthy and negative conflict - How banter, candor, and conflict carry into adult life - Compassion as the adult layer, plus six emotional needs teammates can meet - Four moves to coach the stage nobody coaches LISTEN NOW - https://linktr.ee/captainsandcoaches  #TeamBuilding #LeadershipDevelopment #TeamCaptain #CoachingTips #TuckmanModel

NEW EPISODE: 152 - Be Where Your Feet Are: Building a New Team Every Year w/ George Greene How do you build a culture when half your team is brand new? George Greene [@greenestrength], head strength and conditioning coach for UMass Football, sits down with Tex McQuilkin to break down the offseason that rebuilt a roster. Captains drafted their own teams. Every lift, sprint, and class check-in counted. Leadership got real reps long before the first snap. George also shares his path from paid intern to leading the program at the same school, how he hires and develops staff, and how he weaves sport psychology into every day in the weight room. Man this was a long time coming. After a week of reflecting on our first-ever Non-Superficial BS Conference, I’m still not sure I have the words for it. But I do know that the most fulfilling thing was seeing it all finally come together. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I never claim that my work, or anything we do at Art of Coaching, is “perfect.” And to be frank, that’s not the goal. But I’ll be damned if we don’t bring people together, make them think, make them laugh, make them confront things they otherwise wouldn’t, and help them grow and adapt—all while they help us do the same in return. There’s no way I could capture that entire weekend in a set of photos or fully express the appreciation I have for everyone who was part of it. But I know this: This was two years of trying to get this building done. Ten years of a dream coming together. And in a couple of months, it all culminates with the official release of my new book, #TheAntiheroAdvantage None of it came easily. There were more fights, setbacks, and moments of doubt along the way than I could ever adequately explain. The lyrics of the song in this post was on repeat in my brain during the hardest months…”Not done fighting…I don’t feel I’ve lost…” It was one battle after another. But getting to bring all these people together, learn from some incredible speakers, and have my son there to experience even a small part of it made the whole thing that much more meaningful. And worth it. ‼️😈This weekend embodied what it means to be an antihero and a misfit. Someone who wants to do good but has a little chaos in them. Someone who wants to learn how to leverage their flaws, doubts, fears, and demons—all in the service of good.😈🏴‍☠️ What higher calling is there? We’re all going to go through shit in life, and we need more pragmatic people and resources to help us overcome it. That’s what our work is about. When you read the final chapter of my book you’ll have a new definition of the word “RISE.” Like the lyrics say- “is there more like us?” I hope so. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this dream. And even to those who were part of the nightmare.

Grateful for the responses to #GetSteady so far. Consolidating ideas that have been meaningful in people’s lives feels like a true gift. If you have a copy, I’d love to hear what you think (Amazon reviews are definitely appreciated). And if you don’t have a copy yet, I’ll include a link above! 💪🧠📚

The fastest way to limit performance is to blame the person while ignoring the environment around them. Tex McQuilkin and I talked about what it really takes to develop high performers. It starts with the water they’re swimming in. The standards, the opportunity to grow, the feedback, and the people around them all shape what they believe they’re capable of. From there, confidence comes from reps. Honest film gives you the truth without emotion. Timely feedback keeps you focused on what you can fix now. And great coaching helps people move from curiosity to commitment, instead of forcing advice on someone who isn’t ready to own it. That’s how you build athletes and people who can perform when it matters. Watch the full conversation with @mcquilkin on @thecoachesroompodcast , available on all major streaming platforms 🎤
