Details of my Abbey Fellowship Award at The British School at Rome from Jan - March 2026 are now online at the Abbey Awards website. So it goes…
British artist David Osbaldeston’s work moves fluidly between drawing, print, painting and collage to explore power relations between the personal and systemic.

Extract from David’s ‘Meet the artists’ BSR blog ….further info see link in bio

“What became evident was a need in the studio to position each pair of paintings with photo documentation as posters in a bid to close the gap between the work and its wider context”

The artist would like to express warmest thanks to The Abbey Council and all at The British School at Rome for the facilitation and support in the realisation of new work.

Tatreez is a traditional Palestinian form of embroidery that has been passed down through generations. More than a decorative craft, it is a visual language of identity, heritage, and collective memory. Each motif, colour, and stitch carries cultural significance, connecting people to their villages, histories, and stories.

As part of my MA Photography practice, in @manmetuni ,I created this Tatreez piece to explore themes of memory, displacement, belonging, and cultural preservation. My wider work focuses on Palestinian histories and the ways in which objects, crafts, and traditions can carry stories across generations and geographical boundaries. By engaging with Tatreez, I wanted to reflect on how cultural identity can be preserved through making, even when people are separated from their homeland.

This work connects Palestinian cultural traditions with my own journey as an artist and researcher, highlighting the power of craft as a form of remembrance, resilience, and storytelling.

Threads become maps, patterns become memories. Through Tatreez, I explore the resilience of Palestinian culture, where every stitch holds a story that refuses to be forgotten.
