In February, Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf – Deaf Arts Manitoba (@mcsd_dam) presented “Rebirth of Courage,” an autobiographical play by Deaf Olympian sprinter and actor Natasha Bacchus.⁣ ⁣ Funded by an Artists in Communities grant, the performance was hosted at the West End Cultural Centre. As well, Natasha facilitated a free drama workshop with students of the Manitoba School for the Deaf, sharing her experience in performing arts with local Deaf youth.⁣ ⁣ “This was an immensely successful project that brought together members of Manitoba’s Deaf and hearing communities to celebrate and learn about Deaf arts,” says Cheryle Broszeit, president of MCSD-DAM.⁣ ⁣ Artists in Communities grants support artists, arts groups, and organizations that face barriers to accessing artistic opportunities, or serve a community that faces barriers. The next deadline to apply is September 15! In early April, two of our artists were welcomed to Winnipeg by Deaf Arts Manitoba and Manitoba School of the Deaf. Crystal and Connor were part of Magic of ASL, a performance cabaret and workshop series that brought together Deaf performers new and experienced. Crystal Wolfe and Connor Yuzwenko-Martin each performed a short solo of their works-in-progress. We love the photos that capture the ephemeral motion of Deaf performance - special thanks to Leonardo Salgado! Thank you to Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf and the Winnipeg Deaf community, including volunteers and workers at West End Cultural Centre, and the other artists that we happily shared the stage with. Catch the full version of Dorsal Traces later this year in December as part of Good Women Dance’s Convergence 2026! Image descriptions in comments. Crystal is an Indigenous woman wearing a brilliant rainbow ribbon dress. She is shown in three different frames next to each other - one crouched, one standing and holding a hand up toward the sky, and the third slightly bent over while gesturing with forearms upright and palms facing each other. Her expression in all three is serene. The background is a wide grassy plain with a hint of prairie sky.

At Magic of ASL in Winnipeg, Connor Yuzwenko-Martin will be offering a performance and a workshop to the Deaf community and students at Manitoba School for the Deaf. Performance - Dorsal Traces solo Is Deaf Dorsality an answer to toxic masculinity? Is it a way to navigate disagreement and overcome purity politics? Can it be a form of mutual support and a stepping stone toward true solidarity? Intended as a duet in its final version, Connor is proud to perform a short excerpt of Dorsal Traces, rearranged and given new intentions as a solo. Dorsal Traces is the first collaboration between A Fichu Turning (Québec) and The Invisible Practice (Alberta). Through the bodies and hands of Cai Glover and Connor Yuzwenko-Martin, Deaf Dorsality is portrayed as a rare and necessary deconstruction of Deaf, Queer, and masculine identities. Join them and consider: do we really have each other’s backs? Workshop - Storytelling through Deaf-Centric Symbolism Participants will view an original filmed piece created by Connor in 2020, titled The Invisible Practice, and afterward will be invited to experiment with approaches to shooting original video. They will be encouraged to try unconventional angles and mediums, and consider how stories can be told through tactile and visual emphases. Shot and edited entirely by himself in his house during the COVID pandemic, The Invisible Practice is a surreal hybrid of ASL poetry, contemporary performance, and medium exploration. Image descriptions in comments. Dark blue with white text. A round photo shows Connor, a white man. Starry graphics surround him. Text beneath reads: "Guest Performer Connor Yuzwenko-Martin."
