Crystal is an Indigenous woman wearing a brilliant rainbow ribbon dress. She is shown in three different frames next to each other - one crouched, one standing and holding a hand up toward the sky, and the third slightly bent over while gesturing with forearms upright and palms facing each other. Her expression in all three is serene. The background is a wide grassy plain with a hint of prairie sky.
Connor is a white man wearing an all-black outfit with arms and shoulders exposed. He is shown in two different frames, one above and slightly faded. They both have similar poses with his hands clenched against his stomach, legs splayed, and a sense of tension.
Crystal in her ribbon dress, shown in three different frames against the background of an eagle's face. The upper left frame shows her upright with arms spread out. The middle frame shows her hands together, crossed at the wrist and palms down. The lower right shows her kneeling with a rattle in her hands.
Connor in three frames, all near the bottom of the photo with a large emptiness fading into darkness beyond. The left two frames have him on the floor in differently angled positions where he seems to be trying to get up without using his hands, which are still clenched together. The third frame on the right has him upright with arms straight out and head slowly bowed so that his face is hidden.
Crystal and Connor sit in a semi-circle with two other younger people. Everyone is looking at the young person second from left, who is mid-sign. A signature-like logo at the bottom spells “Outside the Shutter.”

In early April, two of our artists were welcomed to Winnipeg by Deaf Arts Manitoba and Manitoba School of the Deaf. Crystal and Connor were part of Magic of ASL, a performance cabaret and workshop series that brought together Deaf performers new and experienced.

Crystal Wolfe and Connor Yuzwenko-Martin each performed a short solo of their works-in-progress. We love the photos that capture the ephemeral motion of Deaf performance - special thanks to Leonardo Salgado!

Thank you to Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf and the Winnipeg Deaf community, including volunteers and workers at West End Cultural Centre, and the other artists that we happily shared the stage with.

Catch the full version of Dorsal Traces later this year in December as part of Good Women Dance’s Convergence 2026!
