An Indigenous-informed Deaf arts collective living and creating together. 🧏🏽🪶🎨🎭🌈🏳️‍⚧️
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
“How do we have each other’s backs?”

Two Deaf performers, one from Edmonton and one from Montréal, try to answer this through a performance of movement, visuals, and signed poetry. Connor and Cai search for answers with their bodies, hands, and breath in a rare portrayal of Deaf identity, vulnerability, and solidarity.

Dorsal Traces deconstructs and unifies many themes important to the Deaf community - Deaf dorsality, Queerness, toxic masculinity, and the need for male Deaf role models who support each other - and fail - and keep trying.

Dorsal Traces premieres on December 3rd, 2026, at 7:00pm. Tickets for all four performances are on sale now, and Invisible Members can get a $5 discount on theirs! Just check our link in bio or go directly to our website at www.invisiblepractice.ca.

We’re proud to present this brand-new work as part of Good Women Dance’s Convergence 2026 double bill. Your ticket gets you TWO live performances, not just one!

In early April, two of our artists were welcomed to Winnipeg by Deaf Arts Manitoba and Manitoba School of the Deaf. Crystal and Connor were part of Magic of ASL, a performance cabaret and workshop series that brought together Deaf performers new and experienced.

Crystal Wolfe and Connor Yuzwenko-Martin each performed a short solo of their works-in-progress. We love the photos that capture the ephemeral motion of Deaf performance - special thanks to Leonardo Salgado!

Thank you to Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf and the Winnipeg Deaf community, including volunteers and workers at West End Cultural Centre, and the other artists that we happily shared the stage with.

Catch the full version of Dorsal Traces later this year in December as part of Good Women Dance’s Convergence 2026!

Image descriptions in comments. Crystal is an Indigenous woman wearing a brilliant rainbow ribbon dress. She is shown in three different frames next to each other - one crouched, one standing and holding a hand up toward the sky, and the third slightly bent over while gesturing with forearms upright and palms facing each other. Her expression in all three is serene. The background is a wide grassy plain with a hint of prairie sky. taken in West End Cultural Centre by @the_invisible_practice

Collaboration. Intuition. Trust.

Those are some of the themes our participants explored together during our second community workshop. If you couldn’t make it, we hope you can join us this autumn!

Deaf Dorsality is human connection. It is solidarity. It is, perhaps, a cure to some things that affect our society today. And it all comes together in Dorsal Traces, a Deaf duet performance premiering this December.

This week of rehearsal and community engagement was made possible with funding from Edmonton Arts Council and Montréal Arts Council, as well as in-kind studio time from Good Women Dance through their Space Share program. Thank you!

Video description: A short title page showing three people in a studio space. One person holds their hand up against the back of a second person, while the third looks on. Title text: “Deaf Dorsality community movement workshop #2.” Cut to a sped-up clip of several people walking backwards across the studio, shot from just over the shoulder of a person waiting with an outstretched hand to gently catch the walker. Each walker then takes over as the catcher for the next person. Cut to a longer, still slightly sped-up clip of several people standing or laying in various positions in an irregular pattern across the floor. A pair of people walk backwards through this ‘forest.’ The front person’s vision is limited by their cupped hands so they cannot see anything behind, while the person guiding them uses their hand on their back to indicate what direction they should walk. They navigate successfully and the camera pans to show everyone breaking form and hand waving in applause. End with a still image of two young men standing back to back in sharp shadow, only the outlines of their heads and necks lit. Large text: “Dorsal Traces.” Smaller text beneath: “a Deaf duet performance premiering December 2026.” The logos for A Fichu Turning and The Invisible Practice are along the bottom. taken in Shumka Dance Centre by @the_invisible_practice

We had a great time at Deaf Alberta Expo on October 2 & 3! We got to meet so many new folks who were thrilled to learn that Alberta now has a Deaf arts organization to support and uplift Deaf creatives. Special thanks to Jan McCarthy, our collective artist, and Ladan Sahraei, our Board member, for running the booth both days.

We were also proud to share information on our organizational values, encouraging people to vote in favour of the inclusion and dignity of all Albertans - regardless of their national origin. We also advocated for voters to honour the Treaties that make up our province and oppose the separatist movement.

If you just followed us here, be sure to check out our link in bio to learn more about us. You can also sign up to become a member and be part of our workshops, and support our projects and productions.

What’s next? The next couple of months will be focused on our brand-new live performance production premiering on December 3rd - Dorsal Traces! Stay around for more!

The final report for our technical exploration project is here!

Light+Vibrotactile was our longest-running project, and it shows. We learned so much, encountered many challenges, and built something truly special and impactful.

Please check out the final report through our link in bio. An ASL translation is available as well, with links throughout the report that will take you directly to that section in the ASL video.

Closing this out with a few final photos - some not shared publicly yet! Please enjoy, and thank you for showing up for Deaf artists every day.

In a few days, some of our collective artists will be attending the annual Sundance. Some of us will be continuing a spiritual journey we began a few years ago, and some of us will be there for the first time to observe, support, and learn.

Just over a year ago in May 2025, the National Indigenous Deaf Cultural Gathering took place in Maskwacis. This was a rare opportunity for Indigenous Deaf folks to meet, share knowledge and cultural practices, learn from Elders, and build relationships across Turtle Island. We were honoured to be guests and sponsors of this special and necessary event.

This video captures some of that joy, and we believe this deserves its own spotlight so we all can be reminded of the important work we share in Treaty.

Thank you to David Burnat for recording this precious footage with permission, and to Ebony R. Gooden for editing. Thank you as well to Crystal Wolfe and Torrie Ironstar as co-chairs of this gathering, and to the rest of the NIDCG committee and the Maskwacis community for welcoming us.

“We fast and pray, that we may be able to lead good lives and to act more kindly towards each other.” Anonymous - Blackfoot. Recorded in “Native American Testimony” p. 225. Peter Nabokov.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ A space where we can be our authentic selves in our own languages. 🧏🏽‍♂️

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday despite the wild weather! We were so grateful to host 20 community members from a variety of life experiences and backgrounds.

We shared food, learned about each other, and chatted about what our community needs in the coming months. The decision was made unanimously - Deaf & Queer Social should happen regularly!

With our partner community leaders Randy and Paulie, we’re thoughtfully figuring out how to lead, nurture, and protect this new initiative. Some events will be for affinity-sharing Deaf & Queer folks only, while other future events may be open to the public for learning and solidarity-building.

Watch for more news around this! And please share this with anyone who might need this type of welcoming space. We’d love to meet them too! ✨⭐️

Gather. Connect. Support.

The goal of our Deaf & Queer Social is to bring us together under the many flags that make up our community: Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and all the way to the end of the rainbow.

The Invisible Practice is a new Deaf-led organization. While we focus on the arts, we recognize a critical gap in service and advocacy for Deaf and Queer folks. We feel this in our hearts as most of our collective artists are also Deaf and Queer. We want to meet you, learn about you, and understand what our community needs to forge stronger and deeper bonds of support and solidarity.

Some people may not feel comfortable with “Deaf” or “Queer.” We intend no exclusion by using those terms. They are vocabulary shortcuts to acknowledge everyone who experiences language and love in ways that mainstream society often does not recognize or accept.

Please DM if you’re interested, and we’ll share more specific info and answer any questions you may have. This is open to all Deaf & Queer folks across Alberta!

Paulie Whitney and Randy Dziwenka are community members offering their time and guidance to support this event. Connor Yuzwenko-Martin is representing The Invisible Practice and will be present to connect and chat about anything on your minds and hearts.

Minor financial aid is available. If you need some travel money or a little cash for food, just let us know at general@invisiblepractice.ca. We want to ensure everyone arrives safely, and nobody leaves hungry.
