Deaf Heart is made possible through public funding from Canada Council for the Arts. Grants are an essential source of financial stability for independent artists, ensuring everyone is paid well for their time and labour.

The workshop series from September 2025 - January 2026 was funded by the now-retired Explore & Create program.

The Deaf Heart production from February 2026 - June 2026 was funded by the now-retired Concept to Realization program.

We are also very grateful for the use of a rehearsal space at the University of Alberta, as well as in-kind production and promotion support by The Invisible Practice.

These investments have many impacts beyond the dollars: building local community, growing empathy for different ways of experiencing life, and strengthening public appreciation for Deaf-led storytelling!

✨💫Presenting Deaf Heart - a new performance by an ensemble of local Deaf artists. Their stories come to us from places as far away as Aleppo, Shiraz, and Davao City. Together, they have been woven into a wide-ranging tale of Deaf lives, Deaf places, and Deaf hearts.

Led by Deaf Heart Theatre Collective, the ensemble moved through a series of workshops that cultivated various performance skills. Movement, clown, improvisation, and other creative disciplines have been imbued with striking visual expression, dynamic projection design, and dexterity beyond sign languages.

Please join us on June 6 for the premiere, or one of the other performances on June 9, 11, and 13!

Tickets are available now through the direct link below, or go to theatrenetwork.ca!✨💫

We have arrived at the final two days to view Light+Vibrotactile in the gallery! This wonderful exhibition by The Invisible Practice explores the question “How can the most poetic expressions of the world be conveyed through sight and touch, rather than sound?” through tactile exhibits.

It has been a pleasure to host this incredible show. The exhibit closes in spectacular fashion on January 31st with the Vibro-Playground Fundraiser Party starting at 6 PM! We can't wait to see you there.

Saturday!!! I’ll be performing and showcasing the latest evolution of @the_invisible_practice’s Light + Vibrotech packs at their Vibro-Playground Fundraiser

I’ve been playing a small part in this infinitely expanding project headed by Connor Yuzwenko-Martin, offering my expertise in sound to be experienced and re-tooled through a deaf & deaf-blind lens.

As always I am learning so much alongside an amazing team , @temporalways , @judahknockoff , @tactiletheworld & our interpreters + staff at L53

The event this Saturday is a part of a fundraiser to build up and forwards for the future. They just announced some options for cheaper tickets to the event at @latitude_53 this Saturday, please come check out this amazing work in progress!
more information about the fundraiser from TIP
“As a new Deaf arts organization, The Invisible Practice builds capacity in the local community for Deaf-centric creativity. Vibro-Playground is our first-ever fundraising event, and your support will let us serve even more Deaf artists. Here’s a few examples:
    • 🎁 Reduced or free programming. For example, instead of charging for admission to a skill development workshop, we’ll invest the funds in catering to ensure everyone is well-fed, or into transit subsidies so folks can get where they’re going.
    • 👩🏽‍🎨 Paying artists above-living wages during our productions and projects.
    • 📊 Covering overhead operating costs such as insurance, website (this newsletter too!), and ASL interpretation.
    • 💜 Building a baseline salary for our collective artists. Right now most of our work to run The Invisible Practice is volunteer, although we are technically paid staff!
We’re raising $5000 this year because that’s how much we need to complete CARBON MOVEMENTS as our flagship production that showcases Deaf-centric creativity across Canada, plus ensure our second round of ASL for Artists classes this autumn is free! Anything earned above this will go directly into day-to-day costs and additional programming opportunities where we have the capacity.”

Today I worked on the tactile map for the art gallery where we are opening our light+vibrotactile exhibition on Saturday - it was fun being creative this way! And one of my colleagues is working on captioning the background sounds to the vibrating wounds in the pack seen below the tv. I thought I looked endearing in that video! (I am wearing a dark purple top and my arms wide apart in the air). Check out @the_invisible_practice for information on the exhibition and the gala (January 31) - come and check out the cool displays!!! At @latitude_53 in Edmonton!

ID: A starry night sky with large blue heart and a hand extending out of the sky into the heart. Large white letters overlapping to create a poetic flow: DHTC.

VD: Thurga, a brown dark skinned queer artist in a black shirt and is sitting behind the white stripe background.

“Hey folks! Remember the Door Project? It was a short workshopped show at SOUND OFF in March 2024. This was a way of telling Deaf stories across many perspectives and life experiences, in a visual, physical, and dreamlike performance.

Now, we’re so excited to continue this in autumn 2025! We’re hosting a series of workshops that are open to all Deaf community members. No arts experience needed - that’s the point. You’ll get to learn and try hands-on different parts of performance, like movement, set and costume design, script development, and improv. Participants will be paid a daily honorarium for their time and effort. Think of it like school, but WE pay YOU!

There’s even more exciting news! After the workshops, some participants will be chosen to perform in the first-ever full premiere performance in June 2026! This is your chance - treat these workshops like a long audition where you will learn many new things, be creatively challenged, and develop skills you might not even know you have.

Who is “we”? We’re Deaf Heart Theatre Collective. I’m Thurga, and the other artist is Caroline. We’re facilitating these workshops and producing the final performance in partnership with The Invisible Practice.

Interested in the workshops this fall? Please let us know right away! We are still building the schedule, and it will be on evenings and weekends to support your busy lives. We want to get details to you as soon as possible, so just contact us here or at deafhearttheatreco@gmail.com.”
