✨CAPABLE is the kind of artistic collaboration that might come along once in a lifetime. But with the stellar and powerful Ainsley Hillyard, I know it won’t be the last!

To Ainsley and to all the women, non-binary, and gender-fluid folks who contributed: thank you for trusting me with your words and your stories. I’m beyond honoured to be the integrated Deaf performer for this special and critically necessary piece.

We look great on stage thanks to these folks, plus the support of the Edmonton arts community. Thank you all!

ID 1: Connor is dramatically lit in a black space with blue and pink crossing his solemn face.

ID 2: Connor and Ainsley stand side by side, slightly turned toward each other and facing out toward the camera. Ainsley’s arm is on Connor’s shoulder while they both deliver a line. They are both dressed in black pants and slightly see-through shirts.

ID 3: Ainsley wearing a sparkly sequinned jacket and holding a microphone, which is perfectly lit by a tight beam from overhead. She looks just over the camera solemnly.

ID 4: Connor and Ainsley crouched down side by side, nearby arms intertwined while opposing arms are up near their faces with a comically understated “understand” sign using the pinky instead of the pointing finger.

ID 5: Connor is mid-sign while Ainsley is just behind him, peering out from over his shoulder. Connor is dramatically lit in a black space with blue and pink crossing his solemn face. taken in Mile Zero Dance by @temporalways

It’s finally mine - my very own custom butter dish 🥹 A random kitchen desire that began 2 years ago is finally a real one-of-a-kind object thanks to the brilliant Brin Steeves of @oilandbirch, with support from @michelleamberceramics! Thank you both! 🤟🏼

Ready for a tangential rant? It’s been a while.

Today is World AIDS Day, and while this isn’t directly about that, it has my mind on the general topics of queer identity, health, and access to information. That is already hard enough — it’s even harder for Deaf people.

For a few years, I’ve shed tears writing countless emails and messages, trying to engage with Pride groups and orgs in meaningful conversation so that they can begin to embed accessibility in their practices. Out of all of that labour, one single conversation seemed to be leading somewhere… and it’s been dropped for a few months now. That’s the final straw for me.

2/6 weeks in Montréal. Grateful for…

A new book to continue learning about Indigenous histories and present lives, accompanied by a cup of masala tea brewed from leaves and spices that my partner sent me away with…

… local bookshops where I add to my tote collection rather than my library collection…

… lush pathways where a mouse darts across, unafraid…

… friends and colleagues who will spend their whole break trying to get one shot just right…

… giant pieces of object art, something we have plenty of in Alberta too…

… sassy murals in the back of my temporary home…

… home fronts that make your senses sing…

… a theatre that has been incredibly welcoming and accommodating, allowing me to do my job well…

… continuing to take these fun stairs even though the elevator was fixed a week ago! A book and a cup of milky brown tea next to each other on a dark glass tabletop. The book is Native Nations by Kathleen DuVal. taken in Montreal, Quebec by @temporalways

Stern. Controlling. Terrifying. 🦎

Inkwell is the headmaster of a school in the forest. Under his punishing tutelage, lizards learn how to obey and confirm and fit into mainstream society.

Known for: Hissing, glaring, reading new editions of Maclean’s Magazine.

🎉 Silent Soul Studio launch party: Saturday March 28.

12-5pm: open access (check out the costumes and set)

7:30pm: free private party with work-in-process film showing. 📽️

📍Address: Nvrlnd Artist Studio (The Boutique) 1048 21 Ave SE, Calgary AB

Email hello@deafinitelydigital.com to reserve your seat! Plus one’s welcome!

Video description: A black-costumed person wearing a large helmet-like iguana mask. The eyes are large, targeted, and imposing. Black spines run from the forehead over the back. The person signs in stilted ASL.

Transcript: “I am Inkwell. This is my sign name. I am the headmaster of this school. I have gathered all these children here. I protect them… teach them… I make sure they know the world is not safe. I know best! I am hearing! I drill it into them over and over… once they obey perfectly, my work is done. If they disobey… they must be punished.” by @temporalways

Is he really posting something sappy on Valentine’s Day? Connor? The Connor we know??

Yep. I wouldn’t share this delicious ice cream cake from @madebymarcus with anyone else. Thank you for expanding the horizons of my heart, @_zamaannn_.

Negative

⚪️

Space

by Gillian Linden

Video description: A short pan of a hardcover book, which is exceedingly white and clean. Cut to Connor, a young white guy, gazing downward as if considering it. Several thought-bubble captions appear next to his head in succession while he morphs through several expressions of surprise, amazement, and being impressed.

Captions: A super white book about pandemic life.
*thinking I’ll have to wash my hands every time I pick it up*
*goes to wash*
*realizing that hand washing is a huge part of pandemic life*
*realizing that they might have bound the book this way to invoke this visceral memory*
*realizing that the whiteness, and “Negative Space” title probably has sociopolitical layers too*
*impressed by the meta experience before even reading the book*
*psychic respect to author*
*still goes to wash* by @temporalways

Just loving the dogs in my life more than usual 🥹

ID 1: A big long-haired grey mix dog fast asleep, camera zoomed in on their face with eyes tightly shut and black nose nestled in a fluffy dog bed.

ID 2: The same dog stretched out along a wall. He seems impossibly twisted with hind legs fully splayed out and upward, while his front legs disappear into ambiguous layers of fur. His head emerges from underneath, looking right at the camera.

ID 3: The dog gazes up wistfully at a person’s outstretched finger toward their nose. The person sits on a couch holding a bowl of some food in the other hand.

ID 4: The dog is fully tucked under a green blanket with a pillow under their head. They seem to be fast asleep. A big long-haired grey mix dog fast asleep, camera zoomed in on their face with eyes tightly shut and black nose nestled in a fluffy dog bed. by @temporalways

So darn honoured to be part of the performing cast for this new (long in development) play coming soon to Montréal!

I said many times during the past 5 days of workshop: it is so rare for me to be able to simply inhabit an acting role and not worry about producing, or funding, or promoting. All I have to do is sink deep into my craft and leave it all on the stage later this year. I’m deeply grateful.

The Sound of Dogs promises to be a beautiful addition to our national Deaf arts ecology. 🤲🏻

The Sound of Dogs written by Jennifer Roberts @thesoundofdogs
Developed in collaboration with Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal (PWM) @pwmontreal
