The Closing of the Bones is a traditional postpartum healing ritual and massage practice that originates from various indigenous cultures including Southern and Central America. This ritual provides an intentional space where the postpartum mother receives physical and emotional support sometime during the 40-42 days after giving birth. As Mother is mindfully swaddled and gently massaged she is able to slowly release any unconscious gripping, effort and physical tension. She is “held” both physically and energetically so that she has a moment of deep presence to reflect on all that this body has accomplished, and the innate relationship between the nervous system and healing. The loving touch creates much needed nurturing, while the binding warms the body, soothes abdominal & pelvic organs, helps to align the skeleton and close the pelvis after an impressive expansion to bring in new life. This ritual can be followed by a warm home cooked meal. 🍲🫖

Specific practices and customs vary among different cultures and regions, yet this practice remains a beautiful ritual honoring one of life’s greatest rites of passage and honoring Mother as she navigates a tender time of integration. A ritual that benefits all of our future generations. x @umamother

The other day I found out that my dear friend @_hengou @motherbees had passed away. I was in shock and beyond heartbroken. I knew she hadn’t been well, but had no idea how much things had taken a turn. Heng was always so optimistic, strong, and private.

Heng was one of the kindest, most passionate, loving, and generous women I have ever known. An incredible mother to her three amazing children, a beautiful friend, and someone who made everyone lucky enough to be in her orbit feel loved and supported.

The birth community has lost one of the greats! Heng was a true pioneer who helped change the way we view and honor postpartum. Through her bestselling book The First Forty Days, along with Nine Golden Months and Awaken Fertility, she helped wake people up to the importance of nurturing mothers, honoring the transition into motherhood, and bringing back ancient wisdom and traditions our modern world has forgotten.

She was deeply committed to making this world a better place for mothers, babies, and families. Her work wasn’t just something she did. It was who she was. And the ripple effect of her love, wisdom, and dedication will continue for generations.

Heng, I love you! Thank you for your friendship, your never-ending love and support, and the incredible difference you made in this world and in my life. I feel so blessed to have called you my dear friend.

Now that your beautiful spirit is free from your physical body, I somehow feel you everywhere. 🦋

I believe the love we give and the lives we touch never really leave this world. They live on through the people we’ve loved and the seeds we’ve planted.

And WOW, Heng, did you plant some beautiful seeds!!!

Your legacy will live on in every mother who feels more supported, every family who understands the importance of postpartum care, and every baby who gets a softer, more loving beginning because of your work.

Fly free, my beautiful friend. 🐝
I love you for eternity.
You will be deeply missed, but your love, legacy, and spirit will continue to shine on. ✨❤️

Laboured under the open sky in my garden 🤍 3 hours of surrendering, trusting, and giving my body fully to the most powerful experience of my life. The hardest thing I’ve ever done, and somehow the most beautiful.
