When @exrpan and I came up with the idea to create and lead the Spotlight on the Middle of Your Novel generative writing retreat together at @boydsmills, we had high hopes for what it could be, but even I couldn’t have guessed at the incredible energy and beautiful generosity of everyone involved! The whole experience made me so happy. To all the writers who joined us: I really loved digging into your novels, hearing your visions and your questions and your revelations, listening to you read and share, and joining you as you wrote your words. (I found some revelations of my own while you were at work doing some of those exercises and prompts!) There were a number of familiar faces who it was a joy to see again—or to see outside Zoom and in the flesh—and there were also a number of people who were new to me and I’m excited to be connected with now. This group photo doesn’t even include everyone!

My very special thanks and so much gratitude to @meera.trehan, @magpiewrites, and @alisongreenmyers, who brought the retreat magic and made sure everything ran so smoothly, and to all the people who make Boyds Mills what it is.

And one more beautiful thing: Emily and I have worked on projects together for years now, but this was the first time we taught together. I can’t get over how natural it felt, and how much our methods and ideas and prompts melded together and felt so right. Em: I love the way your brilliant mind works and adore talking writing craft with you! I hope we get to do this again!

Finally, as happens whenever I visit the Boyds Mills campus and stay in one my favorite creative rooms at the Lodge, something broke open in my novel in the best way possible. I left with a pocketful of ideas, new plot points, and deer sightings and bunny sightings and chipmunk sightings and I kept my calm when I saw the bats… and I left with a few last cookies of course. Boyds Mills is a good place that gathers good people. 💜

❄️ WINTRY MIDDLE GRADE ❄️

AD | PR

It’s the first #BookMatchMonday of 2026 and I’m kicking things off with a pair of middle grade books that are full of wintry feels.

🌨️ Snow
✏️ @meera.trehan

Winter never ends in the kingdom of Mistmir, and snow remains on the ground all year round. Mistmir’s princess spends her days digging in the endless snow, looking for something that will restore her empty kingdom. When a mysterious girl called Ela appears through the mists, the princess wonders if her wish has been granted; for Ela, there is the tantalising possibility that she may have found the Snow Princess from the cover of the locked book that her mother has banned her from reading. But just what is the link between the two girls, and can a wish ever be undone? A modern fairytale, with hints of The Snow Queen, this is a perfect wintry read. Snow is told from the viewpoint of both Ela and the Princess, allowing the reader to uncover the connection between the characters and providing greater depth to the story.

🗺️ Anya’s Quest
✏️ @jasbinderbilan 🎨 @janerayillustration

When the mighty goddess Ganga hears a forgotten melody in the night, she follows the tune to a palace high in the icy Himalaya. There, she encounters two very different girls, Anya and Mahi, and takes them on a quest to heal the fragile planet. Anya and Mahi learn about actions and consequences, and discover and connect with their spirit animals. They return from their quest with a greater understanding of the power of nature, and their role in protecting the earth. Inspired by Hindu mythology, Anya’s Quest reads like a modern fable. Perfect for climate-conscious readers, it’s a lyrical, touching story that is accompanied by stunning illustrations. A beauty of a book.

Many thanks to the publisher for our review copies.

SNOW ❄️

[Ad|Gifted]

Every day, a lonely princess digs through the snow in search of a way to undo the terrible wish she made – one that has left her with an empty kingdom. But one day, a mysterious girl named Ela tumbles through the kingdom’s protective mist barrier. The princess is determined to bring Ela to her father, the king, as proof that her wish can be undone. Meanwhile, Ela is shocked to discover she’s stumbled upon the very Snow Princess whose picture graces the cover of the locked book that Ela’s mom won’t let her read.

Can these two brave girls from different worlds come together to set things right?

This captivating adventure of courage, belonging and unlikely friendship is the perfect book to curl up with on winter nights.

Ice Dancer ⛸️

Dina and her brother and sister have to go and stay at their Aunt JJ’s in Sheffield. It’s a world away from their rural home in Wales and their Aunt doesn’t even seem to like them! Desperate to escape the tension, Dina finds herself at the Ice Arena with her great-grandmother’s old skates. Skating is in her heritage; it’s in her blood. It gives her courage and allows her to escape from the haunting thoughts of her older sister who died a few years earlier.

She soon makes some friends at the rink and is determined to partner with a talented skater called Rosie. But not everyone is pleased that Dina is good at skating and has joined practice. This only gets worse when Rosie and Dina decide to dance together for the Steel Trophy. The longer Dina stays, the more secrets are revealed - about her family, the past and her friends…

This was a gripping, ice-filled mystery story which I skated through with ease. Much like figure skating, it had twists, turns and thrills along the way but ultimately ended with a heartwarming conclusion. It’s not a fluffy book - it really packs a punch in terms of exploring the effect of a death of a sibling/daughter on a family - but it is a truly compelling read. Living in Yorkshire, we also loved that it was set in Sheffield, duck.

Snow ❄️

Two girls. Two worlds. And one wish which cannot be undone.

In the frozen land of Mistmir, the Princess spends her life trying to atone for the wish she made many years ago. She digs and she digs in the relentless snow, alone, save for her father, the King who rules over an empty kingdom.

Ela thinks her mother cares more about the girl from the cover of a locked book that she will no longer read to her than she does about Ela. So when Ela arrives through the mists and snow into the land of Mistmir, both girls are shocked. Ela is amazed to have found the girl from the book. The Princess thinks her prayers have been answered and can’t wait to take Ela to the King.

Will this story end happily ever after for both girls?
