The @boardinghouse_arts is open y'all.

Once upon a time there was a tiny second story art gallery called The Carrack. On some crowded nights it felt like hanging in the bend of a wild river: swirling with intrigue, startling gestures and sparkling truths. Many deep relations and indelible creations spawned in that little Durham eddy current. It was a moment. And then came the Great Distancing and the inertia of drifting downstream.

It’s easy to believe that nascent art scenes fade and seldom return, especially when the price per square foot keeps climbing, putting a premium on straight line safe bets and blah, blah, blah boxes. These compounding years have conditioned some resignation, which is maybe why there was such a collective surprise to be back together with so many familiar freaky fishes for the opening of @boardinghousedurham this weekend. The swirl was intense after such an interlude, no? I loved how we took care and little breaks on the side.

It's really here tho, at the end of Orient, tucked in next to the abandoned tracks, with a history as colorful as the exterior. Like the Carrack before it, this dreamy third place / studio space is no natural phenomenon, but the result of deep dedication and bold creative risk taking, including wrestling with actual waterways. Thank you Laura and Shirlette for continuing to believe and asking 'can we build the space our (growing) community deserves?'

Kudos to all the supporters, makers and dreamers involved, including @strider_haynes for the beautiful reimagining a building while keeping it radically true to itself.

Catch you round the bend?
