Who thought the barking dog was a good idea?

One story from Oakland Tech Week is still sitting with me.

During a conversation about AI + labor, we heard about technology being used to manage hotel housekeepers: which room to clean, how long they have and an alarm that, according to the example shared, sounds like a barking dog when their time is up.

A barking dog.

Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Because a dog is not every man’s best friend.

Not in this moment of heightened ICE enforcement. Not for every immigrant worker. Not for every Black or brown community. History matters.

Somebody designed it.
Somebody approved it.
Somebody deployed it.

And apparently nobody said:

Maybe don’t bark at the housekeepers.

We keep asking whether AI will take people’s jobs.

I left Oakland asking something else:

What happens when technology doesn’t take your job—but takes some of the humanity out of doing it?

And there I was at the Greenlining Institute, literally standing between the definitions of REDLINING and GREENLINING.

That’ll preach.

Because access isn’t enough.

We can digitize inequity, automate it and call it innovation.

Or we can build differently.

Especially in health tech: make it faster. Make it smarter. Make care more accessible and responsive.

But for God’s sake, don’t forget the person.

Build with communities. Not simply for them.

The future of health is technological.

And geographic.
Economic.
Historical.
Deeply human.

Oakland, thank you for the reminder.

The end of summer means the end of another incredible CityWorks season! ☀️🎓

Last month, we celebrated our 2026 CityWorks interns at an exhibition-style graduation at our offices, where they shared their experiences, accomplishments, and lessons learned with YCD staff, employers, and community members!

This milestone marks the beginning of many promising careers, and we’re incredibly proud of all our interns for their hard work, growth, and dedication. 👏
Congratulations to our CityWorks graduates and a special thank you to the staff and business partners who invested in these young professionals to help make this experience possible.

BioSolutions was two days of founders, scientists, engineers and aspiring builders showing up to answer one question: what does it actually take to build in biotech?

Teams worked on real problem statements pulled directly from companies operating at the intersection of AI and bio, across three tracks:

🧬 AI-driven drug discovery (predictive foundation models)
🧫 Synthetic biology (fermentation optimization)
🗂️ Life science data infrastructure (workflow orchestration)

And the winners:
🥇 Data infrastructure 🥈 Synthetic biology 🥉 Drug discovery

Major shoutout to workforce development powerhouse @melaninscience_ for spearheading and our co-organizers @nsbebayareapro and @syntex_data. Special thanks to @frontiertower for building this with us. And to our judges (too numerous to mention), we appreciate you bringing your diverse expertise and critical thought to the room.

To our community sponsors Fulcrum Genomics LLC, Replit, @genspacenyc, Overbyte and /dev/color, thank you for supporting early stage talent and innovation.

Follow us to track the next build.

Attending my first hackathon, it was so inspiring to see what these folks could put together in only a couple of hours. Congratulations to all of the teams that competed!

I have had such a privilege watching my best friend succeed in her business and passion project. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing it is to see folks fly from all over the country to rally behind an idea that was pitched in an apartment living room over a charcuterie board. It's even more of an honor to be asked to capture these events, to hold the responsibility of how the memory of the event is cemented. MelaninScience is so much more than just a way to connect, it's the vision, the dream of lifting folks into the place where they belong. The seat at the table was carried up stairs and placed right at the head, as it should be. I'm working through all the photos and video from the event - stay tuned!

Who gets to shape the future of science?

As AI transforms healthcare, research, and public policy, the conversation isn't just about technology—it's about trust, access, and who gets a seat at the table. Join Dr. Carmen Banks of Melanin Science, Catherine Tcheandjieu, DVM, PhD of Gladstone Institutes, and Nadine Besson of Bioliterate for a bold discussion on innovation, equity, and the responsibility of building systems that work for everyone.

The future is being written now. Be part of the conversation at the 4th Annual San Francisco Pride Human Rights Summit, Thursday June 25th , tickets link in bio.

A lot of us were taught that if we just did good work, it would be recognized. But in reality, visibility is part of the work.

Dr. Carmen Banks shares the shift that changes how your contributions are seen and valued.
