What is my way of seeing? This has been a lifelong interrogation that began when I was a kid picking up the family video camera, and one I continue to dissect because it’s also an interrogation of myself — my values, my way of existing and making choices as a human being in this world. This past weekend, I participated in the incredible @natashabraierasc “Your Way of Seeing” workshop through her wonderful organization @deep.light.cine which I recommend to all my fellow camera family, artists and filmmakers.

Natasha’s work needs no introduction; her images have defined so much of my visual subconscious over the years (catch I LOVE BOOSTERS in theaters now!). I’m so grateful to have gotten time to get to know Natasha the human being this weekend and not only fall in love with her photography again but to fall in love with her way of being - her generosity of spirit, her raw honesty, her ability to see young cinematographers and to light the spark that makes each of us unique is such a gift and one that extends through her programming @deep.light.cine . She taught us to interrogate the emotional truth inside ourselves and to nurture the inner kid who began taking pictures to begin with, which has not only left me extremely tender at the start of the week (a good thing!), but even more inquisitive about how I got here and how I hope to remain present.

Above are some early Cassie images that date back almost 20 years and some screenshots from my Tumblr account “Camera Shy” which holds so many clues to who I was becoming and who I still am. Thank you, Natasha and my lovely Deep Light cinematographer cohort, for reminding me that depth is where our power lives.

This weekend reminded me that the most meaningful mentorships are never just about the work.

I learned about light, color, lenses, and visual storytelling. But I also learned how to go deeper. To ask better questions, trust my instincts, embrace curiosity, and make space for the artist I’m still becoming. So many of the conversations went beyond cinematography and into the things that shape us as storytellers, collaborators, and human beings.

It was a reminder that our growth as artists is inseparable from our growth as people. The more we understand ourselves, the more honest, intentional, and meaningful our work can become.

In an industry where relationships matter as much as talent, it was incredibly meaningful to spend time with a group of thoughtful, generous cinematographers from around the world. The connections, conversations, and shared experiences were just as valuable as everything we learned in the trainings.

So grateful for this experience. Thank you, Natasha Braier, for creating such a thoughtful and inspiring space to learn and connect. Your generosity, honesty, and deep love of the craft have left a lasting impact on me. ❤️
