#NABJ26 was a special one — my 10th conference anniversary and in a city I once called home! — because of Madame @nabjlaofficial President @sharsaysso and Mr. VP @archiejayspeaks. Thank you for your continued service. I’m honored to gag to these folks and be an example of what’s possible right alongside you. 😜💜✨

#NABJ26 in Atlanta owes me nothing.

With so much going on in and around the country, and the field of journalism being so compromised (including, but not limited to, massive job loss/layoffs)
It was so nice to be able to share space with, learn from, and celebrate alongside amazing Black journalists from across the country. See you next year in HTOWN🤘🏾✨

Some conversations stay with you long after the evening has ended.

One idea I can’t stop thinking about is that leadership isn’t just about what you build, it’s about what you’re willing to give, and what you’re humble enough to receive.

Service is power.

Real leadership asks for a deep degree of self-awareness: the ability to listen for your calling, to understand where you’re uniquely positioned to contribute, and to keep choosing purpose over ego. It means prioritizing care, embracing the full complexity of people and experiences, and playing the long game even when the short game feels louder.

Thank you to my dear friend @rakiareynolds for bringing together such an incredible group. It was such a pleasure to be surrounded by women who embody that leadership everyday.

From continuing a legacy and awarding scholarships, to truth-telling and honoring history, this weekend’s @nabjofficial Region I & Emerging Journalists Conference was certainly one for the books.

Thanks to national leadership for putting all of this together.

Thank you @nabjybj for sharing this weekend with us. Y’all are so appreciated.

Thank you @ojphilly, @chrism24a, and @robfromchesterpa for sharing our panel to talk about the role that sports & its coverage plays when it comes to civil rights.

Thank you to Angela Dodson & the Days family for giving us the privilege to continue Mike’s legacy. To @melanieburney & the scholarship committee who helped bring this to fruition, y’all are rockstars.

Thank you @jenicearmstronginquirer for leading the committee for our opening reception to give everyone in attendance a taste of this city. Shoutout to said committee for always coming in clutch.

Thank you @aampmuseum for having us on Friday and @templeuniv for Saturday.

@nabjphilly I’m humbled to be in community with you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for caring. We still have a lot to do…but we’re ABSOLUTELY making our way through. This is only the beginning.

A beautiful morning with some of the smartest most committed journalists, coming together to lift up the next generation. Great job @melonyroy @_iamnkwa and @emarvelous . A joy to also be in the company of @sandraswclark and @saramlomax , truly greatness in action. There are not enough superlatives for @cherrigregg and the top notch work she is doing in every realm. And I so loved meeting the young ones…each one teach one and lift as you climb… a stellar regional show by @nabjphilly !

P H I L L Y — It’s always good to connect with our NABJ family.
Thanks to National Association of Black Journalists Region I leadership and Young Black Journalists Task Force for coordinating an impactful regional conference in Philadelphia. Special thanks to the NABJ Philadelphia chapter for the reception at the African American Museum, where the work of HBCU (Hampton) graduate and Oscar winning costume designer Ruth Carter is on display. The chapter also presented two scholarships in memory of its late leader and former editor, Michael Days. To every volunteer, panelist and organizer, great job helping journalists along the East Coast to refresh and retool. To the students who attended, keep growing! Deeply needed conversations and training, but we also had a ball! Shout out the Sixers for finally beating the Celtics in the playoffs after four decades.

Irv Randolph - An inside look at his 31-year career
at The Philadelphia Tribune

In December, Irv Randolph announced his retirement as managing editor of The Philadelphia Tribune, after having been at the country’s oldest continuously published Black newspaper for 31 years. He directed the paper’s coverage of Black communities to ensure that their lives were chronicled and their stories told through accurate and thorough reporting. We have invited Irv to take us inside his career and experience at the paper, and what he’s up to in retirement.

He’ll tell us all about it at our monthly membership meeting on Wednesday April 1, 2026, at the Philadelphia Inquirer, 100 S. Independence Mall West, Suite 600, Philadelphia 19106. He will speak at 7pm. Join us at our business meeting at 6:30pm for an update on such projects as the Mike Days scholarship fund (which has reached its $10,000 match), our hosting of the NABJ Region 1 Conference and the opening reception, and much more. MARCH 4 MEETING REMINDER!!
Preserving & Telling Our History
with Michael Coard of Avenging the Ancestors Coalition

It’s been a topsy-turvy time for the slavery memorial at the President’s House in Philadelphia: The National Park Service removed it. A district court judge ruled that it should be returned. An appeals court halted the restoration until an appeal is heard.

Attorney Michael Coard, who has long been an advocate for telling the history that occurred there, is the guest speaker at our Wednesday March 4, 2026, meeting at the Philadelphia Inquirer, 100 S. Independence Mall West, Philadelphia 19106. Coard will speak at 7pm. Join us at our business meeting at 6:30pm to learn about the exciting programming we have on tap.
