When I reflect on my mother’s life, I sometimes wish I could go back in time and help her name what she was experiencing.

I cannot do that, so I remain grateful that she persisted and made so many sacrifices to give me a formal education that helps me understand life better.

I also happen to live in a time when education is available everywhere, to know more about anything I want to understand and create anything I want to create.

I know more. So I can do better.

One of the things

I am never going to get used to

Is setting goals

And achieving them

Without the person who inspired them in the first place being around to see them manifest.

I never used to understand

When clients would tell me they lost a parent during medical school.

Their biggest cheerleader.

And pushing through to graduate without them

Was the hardest thing they have ever done.

Not passing the exams. But finding a reason to even bother to sit them.

I thought I understood.

But now I know that some things are impossible to understand until you live them.

Why play the game if your biggest supporter can’t watch you perform?

Why grind if you can’t share the spoils with your person?

At this point, the only thing I can think of is they wanted the best for you, so go ahead and go after the best.

The best thing I can do for my mother is to get the best for her daughter.
