When getting to treatment is a barrier, sometimes the answer is to put treatment on wheels. 🚐💜

Philadelphia’s first licensed mobile treatment program, operated by Merakey, is hitting the road — making it easier for people to access medication for opioid use disorder and other supports across the city.

Under the Shapiro Administration, Pennsylvania is licensing mobile treatment programs for the first time in Commonwealth history — bringing care closer to people who need it.

@WHYY takes you inside Philadelphia’s first mobile methadone unit — one of three mobile programs currently licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs to bring methadone treatment directly into Pennsylvania communities.

Treatment shouldn’t be out of reach because getting there is. 🚐💜

Secretary Davis-Jones joined Merakey and the City of Philadelphia's Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services to launch Philly’s first DDAP-licensed mobile narcotic treatment program — bringing medication for opioid use disorder directly to communities across the city, 365 days a year.

During its first phase in Kensington, more than 300 people began methadone treatment and 96 were connected to ongoing outpatient care.

Now, it’s hitting the road to reach even more Philadelphians.

Mobile treatment is one piece of Pennsylvania’s work to make help easier to reach when and where people need it.

A ribbon-cutting and press event will be held on Sept. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 265 E. Lehigh Avenue to recognize the launch of Merakey’s Mobile Methadone Program in partnership with DBHIDS. This initiative represents an important step in expanding access to medication for opioid use disorder and reducing barriers to treatment for individuals across Philadelphia. The mobile program will bring evidence-based treatment closer to individuals in need while connecting them to ongoing treatment, recovery supports, and other essential services. The event highlights the collaborative efforts of Merakey, DBHIDS, Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) and our partners to increase access to treatment and strengthen Philadelphia’s continuum of substance use disorder services. A-2705 could divert critical resources away from essential services while limiting individual choice.
