People on the move : Mike W @extra_mikewolf lives off adrenaline. Mike has spent most of his life going fast with help : ski racing, motorcycles, cars, mountain bikes. These are sports where the engine or the hill does some of the work, and where you’re mostly on your own. Hyrox was the first one where neither applied, and a different kind of fire was introduced to his life. “I signed up for mixed doubles in Ottawa because my wife Meredith was training for it and I wanted something we could do together. The running part of it is what stuck, and not for the reason I expected. It turned out to be the best thing I found for my head. Some of that is the kilometres, most of it is who I’m running them with.” Mike is now an avid runner and has clocked some unbelievable paces in such a short amount of time. “We are Mike, Meredith and Evie and have quickly become regulars at River rats. Mike found the River Rats first. He came out for a run while we were both training for Hyrox, loved it, and told me I had to come too. He was right. We stuck around for the people and the community, and now it’s part of our weekly routine while we keep training for our next Hyrox. Evie’s always in the mix too, running, biking, or walking depending on the night, and we’re never going to say no to a theme!! I own My Wolf Design which is a brand and web design agency for small businesses. In my spare time I like F45, Hyrox training and now running. Mike spends his time ski racing, mountain biking, and really just likes going fast. We are doing mixed doubles Hyrox in Toronto this fall and the running we do with river rats should really help us.”

Life has always been good. Lately it's better. And that changes everything. We made some changes. Nothing dramatic. More movement. More time outside. More of the right people around us. Mike and I are training for Hyrox again. Evie is in more even more activitie. We are meeting people we genuinely connect with and spending real time with them. There is this quiet feeling that has settled in lately that I can only describe as: things are really good. And here is what I did not expect. When life feels this good, the things that are not aligned hit differently. Not from a place of exhaustion or burnout. From a place of protection. Like I finally have something worth guarding and I am not willing to let anything disrupt it. I have been in a difficult situation recently. Not with the work. With the dynamic around it. And for a long time I could feel something was wrong but I could not name it. It was just a weight I was carrying. I did something I had not done before. I asked Claude to summarize what the situation looked like from the outside, without telling it what I wanted to hear. Just the facts. What it saw. It put words to things I had felt in my nervous system for months but could not articulate. It confirmed my gut completely. I think the version of me from two years ago would have just put her head down and pushed through. Not anymore. I want things to be really good everywhere. Not just at home. Not just on Saturday mornings. Everywhere. That felt worth saying out loud. :)

My first Hyrox was with another mom. Our goal was simple. Finish it. Prove to ourselves we could do hard things. Send it. This one is with my husband. (later today) Mike is not a gym guy. He is, however, good at everything. Which is somehow more annoying than if he were actually a gym guy. He came out of his first outdoor run doing a 4:40/km pace. On ice. In winter. I was still looking for my running shoes. Since agreeing to do this together I have learned the following: I should be doing 50 wallballs a day. He bought a wallball and marked a spot on the house. What's so hard about it? Just run. Do the stations. I need to tell my body who is boss. He wants to WIN. Did I know this when I agreed? No. Am I mad about it? Also no. Is it a lot? Yes. Every Tuesday night for the past several months our 8 year old has come with us to 7pm Hyrox training. She has watched her mother suffer voluntarily while her father takes notes. I am objectively the weaker link this time. I was the stronger runner in my first race. I have since been humbled. We raced today in Ottawa. Wish us luck. Or wish Mike patience. Either works.

Freak flags I fly proudly... Unpack my suitcase the moment I get home. Doesn't matter if it's 2am. My home is always in a state of "I could host at any moment and not need to clean first." The volume on the radio can never be on an odd number. Unless it's a 5. Because 5 gives even energy. No overhead lighting. Ever. Accent lighting only. Non-negotiable. I make my side of the bed even when my husband is still in it. I always have a nail file and lip chap within arm's reach. No exceptions. The sound the vacuum makes when it sucks something up is genuinely one of life's great pleasures. I clean the entire house before leaving for vacation. In case a robber breaks in and judges me. Recycling gets picked up on Friday mornings. I happy dance Thursday nights and announce it's recycling eve. Every single week. I once gave our door code to a flower delivery girl I had never met because her voice sounded kind and I wasn’t home to accept them. My husband does extreme sports. I don't bat an eye. My sister and I have agreed we want to be cremated and have our remains sprinkled at the dump. Because we love the dump. Because things have been purged and organized. My idea of heaven is getting all of life's mysteries solved. That lost hat. Finally explained. JonBenet Ramsey. Killer identified. Every he said she said argument. Receipts. I severely judge what people order at a restaurant. Down to their character. Flavoured coffee is a morning drink? No. Afternoon only. Black coffee is the only acceptable morning coffee. Flavoured coffee is coffee with training wheels. True crime documentaries calm me.

...Meredith finishing her lunch in roughly half the time it takes Kate, then watching her eat like a functioning adult. Meredith judging Kate’s order. Kate judging how much coffee Meredith had. Mer judging that her coffee isn’t black. We are endlessly supportive of each other. At least one “I told you so,” delivered with love. Reminding each other of the other’s single biggest weakness, unprompted, as a service. An honestly embarrassing number of high fives. Setting completely unhinged goals for the day and then somehow hitting them. Grabbing the laptop straight out of each other’s hands to finish something faster, neither of us reacting at all. Kate adding something to her cart because Meredith told her about it and now she needs it too. A couple of Mike stories, because of course both our partners are named Mike. Skipping small talk entirely to get into the deep stuff, then snapping back to beast mode mid-sentence like nothing happened. At 2:30 on the dot, one of us going “how is it 2:30 already.” Every day. Somehow still surprised. And if Meredith is driving, the country music goes off the exact second before Kate opens the car door. What happened in that car before she got in is between Meredith and the road. Tag your work wife. You know who you are.

Today was Dress Like Your Shoes Day, and the River Rats did not disappoint! 👟 We spent the morning together on the Cambridge to Paris Trail, welcoming plenty of familiar faces and lots of new ones. One of the best parts was seeing so many people from our First Strides newbie run come back out again—it’s always exciting to watch new friendships and confidence grow with each run. We wrapped up the morning with plenty of laughs, a little dancing, and the perfect reminder of what River Rats is all about: community, connection, and having fun along the way. 💚🐀
