Cone, Norway.
After a long snowshoe trek in temperatures as low as –27°C, this quiet post-glacial terrain revealed itself to us. What drew our attention was a sculptural form, shaped over time by the immense pressure of ice.

There was a stillness to it, creating a deep sense of calm.

Five shows open this weekend

Friday, Amsterdam. Framer Framed opens Secret Arts Teachers at 16:00. Twenty art teachers from primary and secondary schools spent a project treating the classroom as a temporary art collective, with the students as co-makers. What’s on the wall is what came out of that: playful assignments, activist actions, a forged masterpiece, some deliberate failures. Guest curator Kevin van Braak. Pay what you can.

Friday, Rotterdam Noord. Ballon Rouge opens The Unfixed Line, 18:00 to 21:00, eight photographers on water. Vivian Ammerlaan’s chemigrams, made by working chemicals straight onto light-sensitive paper. François Hendrickx photographing an imagined landscape with a pinhole camera, seen through the dreams of a crab under the surface. The gallery is run by photographer Marlike Marks together with the artists she shows. Free.

Friday, Rotterdam. Garage Rotterdam opens An Eye Dreads the Sun at 19:00, in the old Volkswagen garage. Atousa Bandeh’s A Thousand Sunsets holds the changing colours of a sunset still in one room, alongside work by AYO, Taqwa Ali, Nolan Oswald Dennis and Jennifer Tee. Three euros.

Saturday, Amsterdam. de Appel opens Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie 2026 with a day-long symposium on class in contemporary art, 11:00 to 20:00, twenty years after the original project. It ends at 18:00 with San Keller’s performance: an art worker walks the building with a copy of Dior’s gold-tipped baton, the one he used to point out flaws in his staff’s work. Drinks after. Six euros, reserve for the daytime parts.

Saturday, Leiden. Camellia opens Face the Alienation at Sijthoff Cultuur, 15:30. She paints as a feminist and a philosopher, from the awkward social positions that come with both: talk theory and you read as cold, take one group’s side and another feels shut out. Free.

Dutch artists Elmar Janse (b. 1994) and Merel Klomp (b. 1997), alumni of the Willem de Kooning Academy (2018), explore how the grounding presence of nature influences the human inner state. Coming from a flat, urban environment, the duo feels an innate pull toward remote and rugged landscapes. They capture these vast spaces as a vital counterweight to the overwhelming pace of modern society.

As highly observant individuals, they experience the world with a sensory intensity that translates into a fast-moving mind. In their work, they seek quietude, finding that nature’s rhythms oﬀer a profound space for reflection and calm. They travelled from France and Norway to Iceland to create a body of work. Through photography and film, their ongoing series from The Glacier Project captures the ephemeral beauty of Europe’s glaciers, tracing the transformation of ice into water, and landscape into memory.

Moving away from heavily loaded narratives of decay, they choose instead to focus on the abstract beauty and geometry of these pristine environments, believing that awe is the first step toward understanding. Their work has been exhibited internationally, from the Netherlands to Iceland. Driven by an urgency to document what may be gone tomorrow, their work becomes an ode to the current and next generations. Above all, it remains an invitation to pause and step into the sublime.
