August 3 from 6PM to 9PM
Reidar’s photographs at Collage are from three bodies of work: Boxed, Bound, and Free. The first cycle, Boxed, is a series of surprising variations of bodies inside boxes representing the many walls we build during our lifetimes. The next cycle, Bound, employs Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage, to symbolize constraints. Free is a set of landscapes depicting life without limitations.

Boxed: Throughout our lives, we build many boxes. From the moment of conception, we live in the walls of the womb. As we pass through the freedom of childhood, we begin to build walls as society and family frown on our individuality. It is our job to rebel and tear down the barriers that separate us from our true selves. While in the box, we face our demons and have a limited view of reality. The box can be a home or a prison, depending on how it was built.

Bound: When we break out of a box, we often discover we are still bound, whether to an earlier notion of self or to other people. At birth, the first tie is severed. In the years that follow, we form social connections but constrain ourselves within that society. Our sexuality and creativity face limits that, unlike a box, are made of the web we have woven for ourselves. These knots are not always limiting. Sometimes freedom is achieved by acknowledging our limitations.

Free: When we finally reach the end of our days, we escape our boxes, untie ourselves, and enjoy the view of a new landscape without restrictions; we know true freedom.

Reidar’s photographs remind us that we are responsible for the traps we set and must escape them ourselves. Nobody else is going to live your life for you. We see freedom by drilling holes or breaking loose from the boxes we continually build for ourselves. We enjoy our freedom when we leave the time clock behind and exist in a world where time has very little meaning. From womb to tomb, the work of humankind is a continual quest for freedom, often glimpsed but only achieved when we stop struggling and find peace.

Tonight’s concept is a suspension based on European paintings of cupid from the 16th & 17th centuries. As always, building the set took the longest, then the tying of Meri, and the quickest was the photographs. Rather than the cherub & innocence appearances, of course a darker, more sinister cupid (And much larger) was envisioned. As opposed to the earlier post of this concept that was suggested by Meri & Noel, this version was the original vision.

Assisting this night was Kinky Bryant as the suspensions are easier with an extra set of hands. Untying was also much quicker.

I do like collaborating with the models, and tonight Meri and Noel suggested a more romantic final farewell image once the cupid image was captured. Meri was the angel saying goodbye before departing from Noel.
