Finally got to see With Limitations, the show from @designeverything_org at @aramgalleryldn that creates a fictional flat filled with objects made by emerging designers that express some kind of limitation to their practice — from time and money to materials and space.

I got to write about the show for the @ft_weekend, interviewing @lewis_duck_duck_goose @tabathapearce @emurphydesign @sammicherryman @grace_eden while it was being installed (thank you for talking to me and letting me hang around!) I helped assemble chairs and carry sofas and at one point I even made a little kenzan (pin frog) out of old picture hooks and coasters. Embarrassingly it’s now in the show — I can only apologise to everyone who has to look at it.

Anyway the exhibition is full of SUCH GREAT designs from more makers than Instagram will let me tag in one carousel. But special shout out to @studio_bcjoshua @freddiekeenstudio @primamateria.design @annaisabout @a_beginners_ @maremmi.design @shed.six @maximlester @audra.g.studio for answering my questions. THE COLLECTORS LOUNGE

AT THE HOXTON, SHOREDITCH

Alongside ‘Travel Light’, we present ‘The Collectors Lounge’, a curated installation that reimagines the familiar language of the hotel lobby through collectible design.

Bringing together furniture, lighting and objects from our wider community, the space looks at the lobby not simply as somewhere to pass through, but as a room for gathering, sitting, looking and living with design.

Each work has been selected for the way it contributes to that idea, combining distinct materials, forms and approaches to making within a single interior. Rather than presenting the pieces in isolation, The Collectors Lounge places them in conversation with one another, creating a more lived-in setting for contemporary collectible design.

The result is a temporary reinterpretation of the hotel lobby, somewhere between an interior, an exhibition and a collector’s room.

OPEN STUDIOS #2

This Saturday, Blackhorse Workshop invites visitors to explore the creative spaces of its resident makers and designers. From first sketches to finished pieces, discover how a diverse range of artists and craftspeople bring their ideas to life.

30 makers from Blackhorse Workshop open their studios to share their work and processes. Working across architecture, interiors, furniture, textiles, lighting, knife making, robotics, sculpture, painting and more, get a 'behind the scenes' insight into the creatives that operate from Blackhorse Workshop studio spaces.

Nicole Chiu @thatsewnicole

Nicole Chui is a messy, brash, and disruptive artist specialising in freestyle hand embroidery. Through stitch, her work is driven by the desire to preserve and create memories, disrupt perfection, and unpick traditions. She is currently exploring the integration of her identity in football culture.

Chui’s work has been exhibited at NOW Gallery, Somerset House, Design District, London Design Festival and The MAC Belfast.

Riya Panchal @mesemestudio

Riya Panchal is a London-based lighting designer-maker and founder of MESEME Studio, creating handcrafted sculptural lighting with a distinctive artistic presence. Her practice explores material, form, colour and light through an intuitive, making-led design process, bringing together contemporary design with specialist craft and fabrication.

Madeleine/Moolark are artists who fell in love with saving/sharing sound and vision. Starting with heritage audio objects and on to creating their own concepts, remaining true to reimagining concepts and reclaiming objects, they craft limited runs of Concept Objects for exclusive spaces and active brands.

Anna Cornish @essentially.wood

Founder of AnnaCornish Essentially Wood, creating bespoke handcrafted hardwood furniture that is both beautiful and affordable. Drawing on her life experiences and passion for woodworking, she designs and makes made to order pieces using a variety of sustainably sourced hardwoods, combining craftsmanship, individuality, and lasting

t’s been a while, so I thought I’d properly reintroduce myself 👋

I’m Ash, I’m 30, a designer, interiors lover, usually planning my next trip and almost always taking photos of something.

At the start of this year I took voluntary redundancy and now work freelance as a designer whilst trying to figure out a few other things - going freelance has given me the chance to work with some brilliant brands, take on different kinds of projects and explore new sides of design I’ve always been interested in.

This account started with our home, and interiors are definitely not going anywhere. But over time I’ve realised there’s a lot more I want to share too.

Travel is a big one. I’m usually the person friends message asking where we stayed, where we ate or how I found somewhere - and I love documenting the places we visit, especially the hotels, bars, restaurants and little spots that make a trip memorable.

Then there’s everything else I love. Photogrpahy, planning events, fragrance, food, good lighting and generally just very nice things

Fun fact: I have a phobia of wooden lolly sticks… or any sort of wooden eating utensil for that matter… and toads. Not the two together but both separately give me the shivers.

Anyway… for now same account. Still plenty of interiors. Just a bit more of me and everything else I love too. What would you love to see more of?
