I'm happy to introduce today Denise DeGidio @metalandwool
Hello, I’m Denise DeGidio, a fiber artist and maker who has been patching, stitching, making, and mending my clothes by hand for decades – a textile practice that began when I was a young university student studying fibers in the early ‘90s. During this time, my mostly thrifted wardrobe was a canvas for making marks and learning repair techniques, mostly by trial and error, and is a practice that has continued to this day.

I hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees in visual arts with a concentration in fiber – centering around weaving, textiles, knitwear, natural dyes, and surface design and have traveled around the country and internationally studying this medium. My studio and creative practice are featured in the Spring issue of Where Women Create magazine, and I have been a fibers instructor in higher education and currently teach workshops and classes locally and nationally.

I appreciate traditional craft and techniques to stay connected with how fiber methods and materials have been used over time and am equally inspired by the stories that our wardrobe has to tell. Nature often inspires my work as it surrounds me daily, and I enjoy incorporating elementary Elements of Art and Principles of Design to bring inspirations to life.

Making and mending are a part of me. Fiber is a part of me. I can’t imagine a world without this practice and am grateful for this creative life. As fiber is a vast medium, it’s hard not to want to do it all. As I take the time to reflect about this phase of my life and work, it seems that a few key components are at the forefront – stitching, mending, weaving, and dyeing with nature’s colors – each facet centered around sustainability. This focus directs my work, trying my part to be a good steward of this earth, helping preserve her bountiful gifts for the next generation and beyond.

This is your sign to meet your internet friends. 🧵 Some of the best people in my life started as ‘just’ online connections … and then one day you’re sitting across the table from them + drinking coffee, like it was always meant to happen. (We could have talked all day long … and we almost did.) Last week, I hung out with @metalandwool while she was in DSM for spring break. Last year, she made these custom patchwork jeans for me (!!) - swipe through to see them close up - which somehow made the whole thing feel even more meaningful. I love when being instagram buddies turns into real connection like this. Creative friendships are the best kind.
