A little follow up on my neck… After consulting with a few different surgeons from around the world it looks like somehow my neck is even worse than we initially thought. Along with my severe multi level stenosis I also have a massive bone spur that’s developed and digging into my spinal cord (circled in red). All the surgeons have come to the same conclusion which is my days of hard sparring are over without risking paralysis.

Honestly, I’m gutted. I have dedicated the last 2 decades of my life to the game and worked extremely hard to achieve a level of technical proficiency and deep knowledge of the art for both myself as a competitor and for my students as a coach. Even though I had a good career marked with a lot of high points I still felt like there was more left to give and really looked forward to getting my neck fixed, getting in shape, and getting back out there. Unfortunately it appears that won’t be possible.
I’m really happy that I’m able to continue my coaching career and develop the next generation of competitors and non competitive practitioners because pouring into others is one of the things that fills my cup and I will now have to live vicariously through my students 😂

I’m consulting with a couple more surgeons just to see if there isn’t someone out there with an innovative procedure that may allow me the ability to train hard again (if you know of anyone send them my way) but it’s bleak.

Lastly, a lot of this past month or so has made me realize more and more how short life is and how easy it is to take a lot of different things for granted. How easy it is to let stress take too much of a hold on you when it comes to things and people that just don’t really matter in the long run, when your time and attention should’ve gone to the people and things that do.

I’m now 41 and I have other priorities that didn’t exist those years back when I was chasing accolades and world titles. Life still has a lot of amazing things to offer and while I’m gutted with this news I’m also hopeful.

In this segment of the @bjj.fanatics Podcast, @dallasniles talks about the fact that you do NOT need to be a champion competitor in order to be an elite coach. He points out that many of the best coaches in the sport weren’t champions, and in his experience, some champions don’t make the best teachers. Do you agree?
