So so so happy that Screenhouse is successfully installed at its forever home, the beautiful McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio Texas!!! Three long, extremely hot days only seemed to enhance the experience and add to the adventure of transporting this 14,000 pound, rather fragile sculpture 1000 miles, lifting 60 feet in the air and carefully placing it onto the custom poured slab. Looking forward to returning once the site work has been completed.

Screenhouse was commissioned by the Millennium Park Foundation in 2019 where it lived for an extended run through 2024. Since then it’s been in storage at the Methods & Materials lot, who expertly managed its safe transport. The “belt and suspenders” framing was designed by engineer extraordinaire Bob Magruder, allowing the assembly of 400 custom cast concrete block to be moved as a single assembly! None of this could be achieved without seamless integration of the teams: Navillus, Methods & Materials and the cheerful and helpful McNay Museum.

My sincere thanks to the incredible Mia Lopez for her vision and leadership in bringing Screenhouse to this scenic spot and Luis de Jesus Gallery for connecting the dots. Also, of course, the visionary Edra Soto who has the distinction of being the first Latina artist in the McNays renowned sculpture park! Alright!

Our objects conservators, Megan Randall & Megan Emery, have assisted in the conservation and repatriation of a historic petroglyph, sacred to the Shoshone Nation. The stone has been returned to its place of origin and MACC is honored to have been a part of its journey. Watch the entire process in the video linked in our bio.

We are thrilled to announce that Kara Walker’s (@kara_walker_official) VIA-supported sculpture, “Unmanned Drone,” has opened at The Brick (@thebrick_la) as a part of the MONUMENTS exhibition and VIA Art Fund was delighted to attend the opening celebrations that took place over the weekend!

In 2021, The Brick (formerly LAXART) acquired an equestrian monument depicting Confederate general Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and its accompanying base from the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville hoped that by giving the monuments to organizations, they would explicitly reveal “their history as symbols of white supremacy.” In order to fully and unequivocally confront the Lost Cause mythology, The Brick commissioned Kara Walker, whose practice has long engaged American history and the legacy of slavery, to create a new work using this monument as material.

Co-organized and co-presented by The Museum of Contemporary Art (@moca) and The Brick, MONUMENTS marks the recent wave of monument removals as a historic moment. The exhibition reflects on the histories and legacies of post-Civil War America as they continue to resonate today, bringing together a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of which are Confederate, with contemporary artworks borrowed and newly created for the occasion. Removed from their original outdoor public context, the monuments in the exhibition will be shown in their varying states of transformation, from unmarred to heavily vandalized.

Co-curated by Hamza Walker, Director of The Brick; Bennett Simpson, Senior Curator at MOCA; and Kara Walker, artist, with Hannah Burstein, Curatorial Associate at The Brick, and Paula Kroll, Curatorial Assistant at MOCA, MONUMENTS considers the ways public monuments have shaped national identity, historical memory, and current events. The dual-institution exhibition will be on on view from October 23, 2025 - May 6, 2026 and admission is free.

One week in and nearly halfway through the install of “Scala” at UIC… We previewed a small section (about 5%) last week at Dock 6 Design & Art, which proved a good opportunity to test the hanging system designed by the brilliant Bob Magruder… Production and install expertly managed by Remy, working on site with Methods & Materials… Amazing efforts by the Navillus team to deliver this massive amount of work on time… It’s incredible and humbling and awesome seeing this come together, I can hardly believe my eyes… 🥲

This past April, Roger Machin of Methods and Materials, came down to give a 2-day rigging class for the staff. Showed us some new tricks and refreshers on the old techniques.

Yes, yes, I know, no steel-toes, no hard hats, no high vis. We did this in a controlled, methodical pace. Like all rigging should be...

Nice to have some staff development in the budget so we can stay engaged and focused. Looking forward to putting this to good use in the near future.
