Referencing flora- and fauna-themed textiles, Susan Metrican assigns the same utility to painted canvas by cutting, sewing, and forming it into image and object. Rather than functioning as a window onto illusionistic space, the canvas becomes a constructed surface—stitched, stuffed, and materially transformed.

The title, Prairie School, alludes to the relationship between figure and ground in painting—the interplay between an object and the space it occupies. It also references Frank Lloyd Wright’s description of Prairie School architecture as being “married to the ground,” emphasizing an integrated relationship with the Midwestern landscape.

Now on view at the Wege Gallery through April 24! Liber Floridus featuring Amanda Curreri and Andy Ness!

We're open Saturdays 10-4, and M-F 9-4, don't miss this BEAUTIFUL SHOW!

Reception April 10 / Gallery Talks April 11

The Wege Gallery presents Liber Floridus with Amanda Curreri and Andy Ness. Featuring woven and textile-based works by Curreri and multimedia works on paper by Ness, the exhibition presents a compendium of the artists’ visual lexicons that include symbols, imagery and pattern rich with personal significance.

The exhibition draws inspiration from the Liber Floridus or “Book of Flowers,” a medieval encyclopedia created in Northern France between the 11th and 12th centuries with contents that span geography, mathematics, natural history, astronomy and countless other subjects. Known to be one of the earliest encyclopedias, its marriage of detailed illustrations and text intertwined spiritual knowledge with that of the natural world.

In Liber Floridus at the Wege Gallery, the two artists blend content with materiality demonstrating a shared wonder within their processes and evolving subject matter. As an old book might fall open to a repeatedly visited passage, Ness and Curreri revisit specific imagery—references to human and animal bodies, folklore, architecture—while churning it through their own idiosyncratic artistic approaches in the studio. The artists’ processes and materials take on further significance within the context of Liber Floridus as one considers the historical implications within the work.

*Some* top people pics of 2025. I feel so fortunate to have connected with many old friends and to have made many new ones too. All with my boo of 21 years and counting.

Art wise, I relished working on my first solo show with @kate_werble_gallery & I traveled to Memphis for a solo @tops_gallery & The year started off with a two person show @stop_gap_projects

I saw lots of great art and basked in Jack Whitten at MoMA- one of my favs. We spent more time in the Tallgrass Prairie. We planted new gardens and built beds to grow food this spring. And we committed to some wild new projects beginning this year.

Wishing you love, joy, resilience, and effervescence as always in 2026.

Showing in Bump in the Night
November 27 – January 3, 2026
Presented by Blackbird Rook

Curated by Nicola Bealing, Bump in the Night brings together figurative works that linger on the edge of familiarity and unease. Humour and menace tangle in images that flirt with mischief, revealing the moment when the ordinary tips into the uncanny and invites a second look.
