Today, I’m going to give you 3 simple strategies to manage your NEAT. But first more bad news.
.
You now know that being in a calorie deficit reduces your NEAT. Today, I’m going to give you another blow.
.
Not only will you burn fewer calories due to a decreased body mass, your body becomes more energy efficient.
.
Let’s illustrate it so that there’s no confusion. All the numbers are made up so don’t take them seriously. .
Let’s assume it costs you 1000 calories to stand all day before losing weight. After losing weight your body should be using 900 calories, but because your body has become more efficient it actually only uses 800 calories to perform the same task for the same duration. .
This is known as adaptive thermogenesis. Sucks right!?
.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about adaptive thermogenesis but thankfully there's something you can do to win the battle against diminishing NEAT.
.
The goal is to increase NEAT or at least not let it reduce when you’re in a calorie deficit.
.
1.ACTIVITY TRACKER - you can’t track fidgeting but you can track the number of steps you take. This is where your Fitbits and phones come into play. .
If you use one then take a look at your average daily steps and either aim to not go below that number or shoot for a minimum of 10,000+ steps per day. Mind blowing, I know. But you wouldn’t believe how many people struggle with fat loss because they’re subconsciously moving less even though they’ve been hitting the cardio hard. The double edged sword is that they have to lower their calories even more to continue to lose weight which leads to even lower NEAT.
.
2.REDUCE CALORIES GRADUALLY - If you cut your maintenance calories too much, we’re talking crash dieting here, this will make you lose weight faster but will also expedite a reduction in NEAT because you’ll feel drained of energy all the time. .
3.PERFORM STRENGTH TRAINING - Studies have demonstrated that strength training subconsciously increases NEAT. .
Put these tips to use and See how you get on.
