Winter Death Race 2026 couldn’t break me … I went until my body could go no more, but I was not broken. 15 showed up, 14 started and 1 finished … every one of them champions who put in everything they had, and then some.

There are 15 souls who are forever my Pack … we did hard shit together, we held each other up and drove each other forward. It is not about winning … it is purely about surviving and enduring to the end.

I learned a few things …
- 7-hour solo hikes through the night in -17°C carrying a 25-30kg pack through 1-4 foot snow and sleeping in snow drifts is not only doable, it is a pleasure most people never attain.
- swims and submergence in 1°C water are a true gift when the outside air temperature is 18°C colder.
- memorising 4 stanzas of a new poem while traipsing down a snow-covered mountain is not only doable, it is a boon for taking away the constant thoughts of the oppressive weight on your shoulders and the strain on your quads and knees.
- the cold is a gift to remove the pain of feeling steel crampons dig into your flesh when you tread on your own bare feet.
- the knowledge that you are really not alone on the mountain suffering, you are doing hard shit with a like-minded pack of individuals and that no-one outside your pack will ever truly understand.
- that the mission, defeat, quitting and your comrades are concepts that most people simply ignore!

After 43 hours I handed my bib, #81, over to Andi Hardy when hypothermia and frostbite ended my race. I was not angry or humiliated at my failure … I never quit. I was, and still am, elated at lasting so long in this gruelling atmosphere. My race was done, yet my aspirations to bring more people into this ‘pack’ for the next WDR are burning even brighter. As with Mel and Dave and Sabi at SDR last June, and Saby again (lasting 47 hours before missing a challenge) with me this WDR, I desire more Aussies and French and Thai and Italians and every other nationality to travel with me to Pittsfield to see what lessons they can learn about themselves while ‘doing hard shit’. For only through effort do we grow, there is no growth in comfort.

Don’t come for the skull; come for the challenge!
