After an incredible past fews weeks, the new “River of Life” landmark mural under the Ontario Line bridge is now complete! The mural was designed and installed by lead Indigenous artist Quentin Commanda a.k.a. Que Rock (@miangunclan), with contributions from guest mural artist Alex “Vizsla” Bacon (@vizsla_bacon) and supporting artist Sadie Marshall (@sadierock13), and Indigenous artist mentee Shawni-Nodin Nanaokase. On Monday, September 21st, @riverside_bia, artists, community, and partners celebrated the “River of Life” mural. The celebration was attended by our friends from the @cityofto, @metrolinx, @eastendartsto, Riverside residents, as well as MPP @petertabuns and Councillor @paulafletcher. Located on the south side of the Ontario Line Bridge underpass on Queen St E, the mural creates a strong visual identity for Riverside and serves as a recognizable neighbourhood landmark and future wayfinding feature for the Ontario Line station. This new mural brings together land, water, animals, Indigenous knowledge, community identity and artistic expression. It connects Indigenous stories and artistic traditions with the Riverside community, creating a welcoming space and landmark where past, present and future meet. In case you missed it, check out some of the highlights from yesterday’s “River of Life” mural celebration over on the blog! We’re thrilled to unveil 11 vibrant new traffic signal box artworks, created through our StART Outside the Box partnership with @downtownyonge! These stunning pieces are now part of a special walking tour by DYBIA, welcoming delegates to the International Downtown Association Annual Conference & Marketplace in Toronto, September 1–3. This piece is by artist Que Rock @miangunclan🧑‍🎨🎨and is entitled “Balance" The design is rooted in a simple desire: to have fun sharing culture. Rather than taking a serious or traditional approach, the artist explores what Anishinaabe and Woodlands art can look and feel like in the present day; playful, vibrant, and full of life. Que Rock is a Toronto-based Anishinaabe multidisciplinary artist from Nipissing First Nation. His work blends traditional Woodlands-style art with urban graffiti and hip-hop culture. 📍1 Dundas St West 📷: @ninjahmal #IDATO2026 Artwork Description:This design highlights the balance of nature and focuses on duality. The design is painted on a large box that stands upright, 7 ft high. The colours are bright and vibrant. Colours of the sky and water throughout. Each side showcases the spirit of two crane birds on the front side. There is a character that is bright, with two large ears that look like a rabbit's ears or two feathers. This character is NanaBoozhoo. Then, on the back surface, there are two baby bears climbing a tree together. The last side has two butterflies. There are energy lines through the entire design, including ribbons flowing through the background. The design is a visual representation of what spirit looks like. There is far more that unites us than divides us. Wisdom, love, humility, respect, honesty, courage and truth are not only teachings to honour, but principles for how we build together. It was powerful to see this message reflected in Southern Ontario and to be reminded that the same spirit must guide how we develop our cities and natural-resource economies: through respect, consent, partnership and care for the generations ahead. Peace. ✌🏽🇨🇦 🦅
