A huge thank you to @bodymovementsfestival, all the incredible artists who took part to The Queer Archive exhibition.

As part of the festival, we brought together a selection of photography and print-based works exploring queer bodies, intimacy, identity, desire and self-expression — bringing different artistic perspectives into dialogue within the vibrant atmosphere of the festival.

Thank you to all the artists for sharing your work with us, and to the Body Movements team for making the exhibition possible.

So grateful to have been part of this year’s festival!

As I donned a traditional pair of lederhosen and tightened my ski boots last spring in Austria, I knew I needed a little luck for the story I was about to photograph. After all, I had to shoot an entire cover feature in about five hours.

It was early on a sunny spring Saturday in the Zillertal Valley. I was teaming up with fellow Canadian writer @jenny__malloy to cover the 12th annual Lederhosen Wedel Finale, a raucous high-altitude ski party in this beautiful part of the Austrian Alps.

To join in, all you need is a pair of skis, some lederhosen (or a “dirndl,” the female equivalent), and a festive attitude. I would soon learn that having a talent for dancing in ski boots and a strong liver is also a plus.

Dressed in our outfits, Jenny and I felt ready to dive in. Still, something felt off. “We still look too Canadian, eh?” I asked her. With a nod to Bob and Doug McKenzie, we had to accept it: we were just Lederhosers.

Even still, we headed into the mix of skiing and accordions. For the next few hours, couples twirled in ski boots, slopes were schussed, whips cracked on picnic tables, and many steins were prost-ed.

I did my best to tell the story of it all with my camera. Here are a few of my favourite images from the trip.

I want to thank my friends at @visitaustria and the kind folks at @myzillertalarena and @zillertal.at Without them, travel stories like this wouldn’t be possible. And of course, thanks to the team at @rangebyensemble and my old friends @lorilillymorgan and @stefaniesaysso for supporting this piece for their wonderful magazine.

This festival is a must-attend if you’re a skier and you enjoy things like fun. This year, it takes place on April 11th.
