SORGÉ (CHUMA).. spray paint/compound ink + rain on packing cardboard.. pinned track is by South African composer Andile Khumalo @andile_khumalo, off the staggering work Tracing Hollow Traces.. rather than layering disparate genres into a simple collage, Khumalo unifies avant-garde European modernism, polyglot American aesthetics, and traditional African musical principles through an intense focus on the foundational properties of raw sound.. a searing dissection that highlights indigenous modalities as appropriated and swallowed by colonial academic complexity.. performed by soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw @shawsoprano , conductor Michael Lewansky @michaellewanski ,and Chicago’s Ensemble Dal Niente @ensembledalniente.. released in ‘24 by @newfocusrecordings .. beauty dm for album art comms.. follow @s_o_r_g_e #contemporaryclassical #avantgarde #painting #brutalism #primitivism

We're overjoyed to announce that Chicago-based conductor, writer, and educator @michaellewanski will become our second Artistic Director! His first concert will be Oct. 18, 2026 — our 2026/27 season opener. Born in Savannah, Georgia and trained at Saint Petersburg Conservatory and @yale.music, Michael is a self-described "advocate for both new and old musics alike" who seeks to "create deep connections between audiences, musicians, composers, and the music that is part of their culture, society, and history." When he's not leading our ensemble, Michael is the conductor of @ensembledalniente, an internationally lauded new music ensemble, and Associate Professor of Instrumental Ensembles @depaulsom. "It's a great honor to be invited to succeed Greg Hughes as the Artistic Director of the Lakeview Orchestra, and I look forward to building on the terrific artistic legacy he and the ensemble have built over the past 13 years," Michael says. "Lakeview Orchestra is a group of excellent musicians who are here for the right reasons: love of the music, a desire to inspire its community, and a belief that orchestras are for everyone, not just a few." Fall could not come sooner. Join us in welcoming Michael to the @lakevieworch hive! 🩵 🙌🏼 🎻 🥁 🎺 🎼 💙 A text graphic with a blue background. The text reads "New Artistic Director: Michael Lewanski" and features a headshot of a white man with dark blond hair and blue eyes. He is wearing a white collared shirt.

An intense first year of teaching at University of Chicago coming to an end. Some parts were wonderful, some parts really difficult, but I found an incredible community, so many good people thinking and making music, art, theory - one never knows from where you suddenly get hit with a deep insight or something that shakes your thinking at its foundation! To many more years to come!
