What is 24 hour track racing? Well it's pretty self explanatory. You run on a track for 24 hours and try and go as far as you possibly can. There are a few races throughout the year that you can do in the UK. You have to remain on the track for 21 of the 24 hours for it to count. Any extra distance over the 400m per lap you do - to go to the toilet, collect food, move out of the way of other runners etc. Doesn't count towards your total distance. Everyone says it is a mental game pushing yourself through when nothing around you is changing. If you haven't read @michaelstocksrunner One Track Mind book you really need to. There is a GB team for this sport! One of the high points of lockdown was my discovery of books and reading. I had never understood or taking the time to read and would much rather watch the film. Well we've come a long way and these are my highlights of 2024. Acclimating in a heat chamber is an effective strategy for preparing for races in warm climates. The objective is to maintain a core body temperature between 38.5 and 39 degrees Celsius for as much of the session as possible. In this instance, the chamber was at 40 degrees Celsius. Typically, this involves starting the session at a faster pace to increase body temperature quickly, then slowing down to maintain the desired temperature range. Ideally, athletes should complete 5 to 8 sessions, timing them close to the race day but allowing enough time for full recovery during the pre-race taper period. However, access to a heat chamber can be limited by location or cost. In such cases, alternative methods like using a stationary bike or treadmill in a heated room at home can also be effective.

Celebrating @carolineultrarunner (conveniently on #medalmonday) with a GB qualifier, outright race win and a new course record. Some day that! Over to Caroline to share a recap of the race… “The 100km road race is such a tough event, requiring consistent pacing with no place to hide! I encountered several unforeseen problems during the race and was a bit disappointed to miss my target time. However, I was determined to push on. Running a one-mile loop 63 times helped me break the event into manageable chunks. I could see my crew at regular intervals, getting a boost each time I passed the support area. Despite the challenges, I learned a lot and, all things considered, had a great day!“

1st lady, 1st overall, course record broken and a 100km PB of 07:41:52! Running a 100km race in the summer was always going to be a gamble due to the heat. It was very warm, however the heat was the least of my problems today! The day didn’t get off to the best start with diarrhoea through the night. No idea why! Jane sped off to get me some Imodium but the first few hours I was in and out of a portaloo. I somehow managed to maintain my pace through all of that. I quite epically threw up at mile 49 near the support area for everyone to see 😬 my pace was already drifting a little around this time, got a stitch, couldn’t get much down other than water but Mike and Jane really kept me going. A caffeine bullet with about 8 miles to go really helped and I got a couple of gels down and managed to pick up the pace. I’m a little disappointed to miss my target time of 7:35, but 7 minutes off after all that is pretty good going and I don’t think I could have done any more today. A HUGE thanks you to Jane and Michael for crewing me. The dust has settled for @michaelstocksrunner post @comradesmarathon , the largest and oldest ultra marathon in the world. Here’s what he had to say… “It feels like a privilege just to be on the starting line of Comrades. To be back after six years was really special. As for my run, it was the best I could have hoped for after recent injury problems. When I couldn’t train as I wanted to, I focused time and effort on the controllables - like heat acclimation, race nutrition and hydration practice. It can’t completely make up for a lack of training, but it meant I learned a lot that will serve me well in future races.“ It’s one for the bucket list and if you ask Mike, one that should be repeated 11 times plus! Huge congratulations again on an incredible performance despite the setbacks.

At first glance, running 100 miles appears to be a solitary effort. The journey to the finish line relies solely on the strength of your own legs, and your determination on the day dictates what you can achieve. However, when an athlete finally crosses that line, overcome with relief and joy, the victory is often a shared one. What may seem like an individual triumph in a solo sport is, in reality, a testament to the support and teamwork that made it possible.
