Una Palabra: Grateful

Grateful to gather en comunidad with our Somos Escritoras Mother-Daughter Book Club to read and discuss the El Cuarto Turquesa/Turquoise Room and Singing Justice/Singing Peace: The Story of Joan Baez by Monica Brown.

Grateful to sketch and write about our hopes and dreams for ourselves and our mothers and daughters - putting into the world all that we hold in our hearts, letting our imaginations dream of endless possibilities.

Grateful to Penelope’s for opening space for our mother-daughter book club - and like the books we read and discussed continues to plant seeds in our community of hope and love.

Grateful to partner with the Texas Book Festival Real Reads Program and the wonderful Michelle Hernandez who makes dreams come true.

Can’t wait for our next meeting at the Texas Book Festival to gather with Monica Brown and learn with and from her.

Reading Rocks Stars RGV was magical! Thank you as always to everyone at @texasbookfest & all the librarians & educators who make it such an unforgettable experience for kids & the authors! 12-year-old me left a piece of her heart in the Valley when we moved all those years ago—every time I come back I feel a little more complete.

1 & 2. Handing every student their very own copy of No Way Never Sisters!
3 & 4. Speaking to an auditorium full of 4th & 5th graders about the writing journey & teamwork.
5-8. Students made mosaics, comic strips, giant lockets & displays inspired by the book!
9. My volleyball picture when I was 12, a proud Sharyland Rattler.
10. Me today in front of a colorful mural McAllen, heart bursting with happiness.

Que chimba la Vida.

Somos Escritoras madre e hija book club gatehred en comunidad to discuss Little Rebels by Yuyi Morales. We shared food, responded to the book through art and storytelling, and supported one another.

We gathered at the Texas book festival with Yuyi Morales for a special session for our madres e hijas. Yuyi shared her process, read her book to us, and engaged in a beautiful dialogue of our reactions to the book, connections, and our own art and writing processes. Our individual sharing can truly lead to our collective healing.

Thank you, Michelle Hernandez for supporting Somos Escritoras. These opportunities are life changing and mean the world us. Thank you, Texas Book Festival and Real Reads.

📰 News from the road: I just got back from the Texas Book Festival. The organizers did such an amazing job! It was a quick day and a half but wow! I got to meet so many inspiring young readers, I made new friends, saw old friends, got to hang out in person with brilliant bookmakers I’ve only known from a distance. We made silly drawings, we talked about the power of stories and this whole journey of life, and we celebrated books and those who read them. It was a special time and I’m so glad to have had the chance to participate and share HOW TO SAY GOODBYE IN CUBAN.

Big heartfelt thanks to:

@michelleahernan for the chance to join in.
@micahplayer for the friendship, encouragement, and the amazing book. So glad to have gotten to meet up.
@danielnayeri for sharing a stage and inspiring me along with all the kiddos and families. Grateful.
Anne Wynter, @lizgardensalad , @rebstead , @megmedinabooks and many others for reminding me that this book community is smaller than I think and that’s a beautiful and important thing.
@bakerratliff for making the trip and introducing me to your fantastic kids. Cheers friend.
@bobsheabooks , @andrecaceresg ,and @teachsolis for demonstrating that drawing can be fun even in high stress situations! I’d sharpie with you all anytime.

So happy I got to see and meet so many friends @texasbookfest and hear @jasonreynolds83 speak to a full house (Back To The Future! Japanese Kit Kats and novel translations! On writing!). Very grateful for this awesome community! Thanks @simonkids for sending me and TBF for having me! This was a blissful weekend!

DAY 2 @texasbookfest highlights:

The stunning author breakfast hosted by @26keysproductions and @parisreview where I got hang out with my friend @jasonblitman and so many others!

Introducing the legendary @ibramxk and listening to his insightful commentary.

Welcoming back @officiallymcconaughey and meeting @lyle_lovett + his sweet family, who — like The Gabels — love the Butt or Face series (👀 @karilavellewrites). It was so fun to see the audience’s reaction to Lyle’s surprise guest appearance.

@gracemgabel and I running up and down the pews of First Baptist Church trying to facilitate Matthew’s audience Q&A (at least we made people laugh 😅).

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, the TBF team celebration at the end of it all. Despite all the last minute challenges, I’m so proud of my TBF colleagues and our legion of interns, volunteers and everyone else that helped make the 30th annual Texas Book Festival a success. We did it! 🥳🫶🏼
