Some of the best business advice doesn't come from a textbook. It comes from someone who's lived it. For our first session spotlight, we sat down with Michelle Chavez of The Tote Project, who's been building a fair trade brand for over 13 years. What's carried her through all of it, a pandemic, a shipment stranded at sea, every hard season, is the network she built and leaned on. That's the lesson our cohort took into the room this week, that asking for help isn't a weakness, that you keep coming back to your people, and that the person who fills your gap might be sitting right across from you. Michelle is the Cofounder of The Tote Project, a fair trade accessories brand that gives back to support human trafficking survivors. She's been writing and speaking about ethical fashion across the country for over a decade. She also serves on the board of Fair Trade Federation and Fair Trade Los Angeles. Michelle lives in Southern California with her husband, two children and rescue pup Jean Valjean. Thank you, Michelle, for showing up for our founders. Swipe through for what we learned.

We were excited to have our Board Chair @michelleforgood represent Fair Trade LA at the launch of LA28’s new Made for Two-Eight program! 🎉 Hosted at Homeboy Industries, the gathering celebrated a new initiative that will give small, local businesses the opportunity to create officially licensed merchandise for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With Homeboy Industries announced as the first licensee, this marks an exciting step toward ensuring the economic benefits of the Games reach local businesses and communities. We love seeing LA28 create opportunities that put people and local economies first!

Recognizing Our Unsung Heroes! ⭐️ (PT 3) The Tote Project | Los Angeles, CA @thetoteproject is an incredible fair trade social enterprise that champions anti-trafficking initiatives. Last year, they chose Impactful Missions as their nonprofit partner for 2025, donating 10% of sales on their entire collection to fund our school, creating a place of refuge and safe haven for Haitian children to grow in this time of great tension and insecurity. 🎨 @lifewithfayfay of The Tote Project + @miniandmeep created two custom designs of shirts + onesies for us to raise money for our school 👜 They also created the Love For Haiti tote, which donated 50% of the profits to Haiti 🍝 Their support helped feed nutritious school lunches for our 60 students last year! 🛒 Shirts + Onesies + Totes still available for purchase @impactfulmarket

A few beautiful moments from Fair Trade LA. Representing Brazil and sharing the heart of Sol Search through our handmade jewelry was truly special. From meaningful conversations to meeting people who value artisan craftsmanship, this event reminded us why we create. Thank you, Fair Trade LA, and everyone who stopped by our booth and supported handmade treasures. 💛 #SolSearchJewelry #FairTradeLA #Brazil #HandmadeJewelry #ArtisanMade
