Kijk ‘m shinen!

🪸 One of a kind, knallende kleuren, uniek patroon.

Made a slightly crazy purchase for the kitchen today…
Can you guess what it is? By the way, you can’t see it in the picture yet 😅

💥Mickey Philips x Rijkswachters💥

When I found out that May We Feed the King is about a curator who assembles scenes in historical buildings with fake food, I knew this was a book I should read, as I’ve had a fascination with fake food ever since going to Japan for the first time.

The book consists of three parts. In the first, we meet the curator and find out about her latest brief. In the second, we read about the kings who lived in the castle, and in the third we return to the curator as she finishes the assignment. You could say that the curator and the King are trapped in opposite versions of the same struggle. The King is trapped inside a story other people are constructing about him, whilst the curator makes a living constructing stories about people who can no longer correct her.

This month I’m only reading novels from the Booker Prize longlist. This is the third one I’ve read and the most fragmented so far. I really enjoyed how every short chapter felt like a scene in itself. The fragmented structure also fits the novel’s questions about history: what story can we piece together from the traces that remain, and how reliable can that story ever be? Even the fake food starts to feel like part of that question — a carefully researched reconstruction can look convincing without ever being the real thing. Highly recommend!

Please enjoy some fake or real food (that’s for you to decide) on the next couple of slides.
