Today would have been my oldest baby’s 20th birthday. It’s been almost a year since her death and there is still a lot of sadness and anger that she’s no longer here, but my hope is that all who loved her choose to focus on the joy that she brought to us in her short life.

Mikayla still consumes many of my thoughts every single day and there are moments when the grief becomes heavy. When it does, I think of her as she was in this video...carefree and happy. My faith assures that because of her faith in Jesus, she is now immensely happier dancing and singing with Him. This, more than anything else, is what gives me the strength to cope with my pain.

I look forward to the day when I get to put my arms around her again in heaven. Until then, I will be grateful for the time I had with her and use this tragedy to propel my purpose to help others.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you are suffering from any form of mental illness, please know that it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Mikayla’s mental illness fooled her into believing that it wasn’t okay to not be okay, so she hid the scariest part of her illness from absolutely everyone, even her mental health professionals. When I think about this is when the anger kicks in...not at Mikayla, but at the disease that prevented her from seeking help from those who could have helped her find happiness on this earth. And now those who cherished her will have a void that no amount of time can fill. Please don’t suffer in silence. You are loved and as a child of God you are worthy of happiness.

The passage below was Mikayla’s confirmation verse and more than ever we are clinging to these words as we mourn the loss of our daughter: 🦋
So do not fear, for I am with you;
