Located on Central Parkway, on @overtherhine’s border with @downtowncincy, the American Building is internationally recognized as an excellent example of Art Deco architecture. Built in 1928, this 16-story limestone structure was designed by Joseph and Bernard Steinkamp, prolific local architects responsible for many elegant buildings of the era. It features a stepped façade and geometrical details. The lobby sports a coffered ceiling with @rookwoodpottery tile, walls covered in book matched marble, and a terrazzo floor. When built, the property owners marketed the office building to the legal community, citing proximity to the Hamilton County Courthouse. After a complete renovation in 2004, the building now contains luxury condominiums with a salon and offices at street level. The residential units have high end finishes including granite counters, stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors, and the building features a rooftop deck, fitness center, clubhouse, and secured parking. Those of you in Ohio, Ohio Open Doors is currently taking place. This statewide initiative "opens doors" to numerous historic sites. You can find a map and schedule on the @ohiohistory website. We took the docent-led tour of the @cincymuseum, which we hadn't done since the most recent renovation. Looking over my photos, I wish I had done more to capture the size of the half-dome lobby. This was the largest half-dome in the world when completed in 1933! After the completion of the Sydney Opera House, this is the largest half-dome in the Western Hemisphere, tall enough to fit a 10-story building inside. The glass mosaic murals in the lobby feature my favorite pair of plaid pants ever. Elsewhere, I kept examining the details—hinges and doorhandles—and wishing that everything in my life were so thoughtfully crafted. The Rookwood-tiled ice cream parlor continues to be a favorite. This room was originally created as a teahouse, but the colors are perfectly suited to ice cream. One space that was new to me on this tour was the long meeting room upstairs that can be split into three smaller spaces. The razzle-dazzle painted doors [each one different!] are bananas. My favorite room, though, is the ladies' waiting room with its carved linoleum jungle mural. I have a bazillion more photos, so this is just a brief taste. As with all things, Union Terminal is best experienced in person!

Have you ever wondered about this building on the edge of Eden Park? Architect Abe Dombar, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright and the foreman and site architect at Wright’s Fallingwater, designed this 6-unit apartment building on Luray Ave. in Walnut Hills for clients Ina and Peter J. Zimpelman, who moved into the largest apartment. At first glance, this circa 1940 building, dubbed Ina Plaza, seems to lack any expected Wrightian influence. In a nod to the mentor’s philosophy, Abe’s son David explained in a 2008 @cincinnatimagazine article that his father “tried to make the house and nature comfortable with each other.” The units take advantage of the building’s proximity to Eden Park, their balconies and windows bringing the outside in. Ina Plaza’d design demonstrates both Art Deco and Art Moderne influences, with streamlined curves, delicate geometric patterns on the façade, and a neon street number above the front door. Both @graeters and @rookwoodpottery have been Cincinnati fixtures since the 19th century, and their artistry comes together in the @cincymuseum’s Rookwood Ice Cream Parlor, featuring Graeter’s Ice Cream! In 1870, Louis Charles Graeter began selling French Pot-made ice cream out of a cart on the streets of Cincinnati, eventually opening up a production space in Walnut Hills with an ice cream parlor in the front. In 1880, Maria Longworth Storer founded Rookwood Pottery in Over-the-Rhine as the first large manufacturing enterprise founded and owned by a woman in the United States, launching the art pottery movement in America. Union Terminal opened in 1933 as the largest half dome in the world, welcoming travelers from far and wide with its Art Deco detailing. The tea room, entirely covered in Rookwood tile attributed to Rookwood artist William E. Hentschel, served as USO headquarters during WWII. Though the focus is now on ice cream, the interior hasn’t significantly changed since the 1930s. Rookwood tile can be found in buildings throughout Cincinnati (and beyond!), including many old homes, and Rookwood continues to produce its historic designs and innovative contemporary tile so, whether you’re restoring an old home or designing a new one, you can find the perfect Rookwood accent to add. And, though you can now find Graeter’s in grocery stores across the country, the ice cream just tastes better in one of its hometown parlors. Originally built as the Carlton Terrace Hotel in 1920s. Now the Carlton apartments owned by Mercy Home and providing supportive housing for adults. This apartment building on Cleinview Ave. is a great example of Art Deco architecture. How can you tell it’s Art Deco? The style, popular from the 1920s through about 1950, typically features a flat roof, stepped parapet (low wall at the edge of the roof) and contrasting banding or other simple decorative pattern on the façade. Designed by James Gilmore, this 1928 building checks all the boxes! According to architectural historian Walter Langsam, the Gilmores, a prominent local banking family, sent young James abroad at the age of 10 to prepare him for his career. He studied engineering and architecture in Italy. When he returned to the US in 1902, Gilmore worked for the Cincinnati firm of Desjardins & Hayward and later with the much older and well-established architect James W. McLaughlin. His best known collaboration with McLaughlin is the @walnuthills branch of the @cincylibrary. Gilmore struck out on his own in 1906, designing elegant residences in Indian Hill, Hyde Park, Clifton, and several homes on and around Madison Rd. in East Walnut Hills. In 1910, he designed the Coppin’s Department Store in Covington, the first reinforced-concrete skyscraper in Kentucky. In the 1860s, Woodburn Ave. constituted the western boundary of the Village of Woodburn, which is the origin of our neighborhood today. Woodburn was annexed into the City of Cincinnati in 1873 and became an increasingly urbanized streetcar suburb. The city demolished three buildings on the west side of Woodburn Ave. in the late 1920s in order to extend Madison Rd. into Walnut Hills and connect it to Victory Parkway. Built in 1929 for the Central Trust Bank, this Art Deco-style building was constructed on a triangular wedge of land on this new corner. It is clad in limestone with copper and green marble trim and a voluminous interior with a coffered ceiling and large windows looking out at the street. The property was utilized by the bank until 1961 and, after years of vacancy, it was acquired by the @walnuthillsrf in 2014 and then redeveloped by South Block Properties into a two-level commercial space. The historic building is now home to @6nthemornincincy1, a restaurant focused on Southern-style comfort foods paired with cocktails, and its alter ego @6atnitecincy1, a speakeasy-style lounge in the basement. @6nthemornincincy1 is currently participating in the FallFest punch card event. Cincinnati, where I live and design my jewelry line, is full of inspiration. Built in 1931, Carew Tower was the tallest building in the city for 75 years. This Art Deco gem is an early example of a mixed-use development that included dining, office space, a hotel, and the Emery Arcade shown here, which was a shopping destination. From the intricate metal grills to the @rookwoodpottery tile surrounds, this grand two-story space retains its Art Deco glamour almost a century after its construction. It’s a pass-through space that invites a close look to admire the quality of its craftsmanship. Jewelry is the same way, don’t you think? Have you ever wondered about these small apartment buildings that are found all over Cincinnati? They are designed in the Art Deco style, which originated at the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industrieles Modernes in 1925. Art Deco found its visual expression in everything from jewelry to household appliances, its streamlined simplification and geometric ornamentation looking optimistically toward the future after the horrors of WWI. Architecture may be the most celebrated legacy of Art Deco, and some of the most beloved local buildings are masterpieces of the style inside and out, including the Netherland Plaza Hotel, Union Terminal, Dalton St. Post Office, Krohn Conservatory, and the Times-Star Building. In Cincinnati, the emergence of the style was concurrent with vector-like growth from the city center, and modest Art Deco apartment buildings soon lined major arteries. Like the streetcar suburbs before them, these developments are a time capsule of a significant period of Cincinnati’s growth. This boxy, 2-story structure is a ubiquitous building type in Cincinnati. Typically made of brick, its roof is flat, and decorative elements on the symmetrical facade include a stepped parapet and simple contrasting banding or other decorative brickwork pattern, and sometimes glass block and a metal canopy. Built between 1925 and 1950, these sturdy buildings can be an affordable, small-scale entry into rental property ownership.
