Stop asking “Do you have to go potty?” every five minutes. 🛑 Try this instead. 👇

We often put the entire demand on our kids to figure out their internal cues, but they learn best by watching us. In our latest episode, pediatric OT Annie Close shares a game-changing hack: Narrate your own bladder.

By simply saying, “Oh, I feel a little pressure in my tummy, my bladder is telling me it’s full!” you are:
✅ Normalizing the sensation.
✅ Teaching the vocabulary of interoception.
✅ Removing the “power struggle” of potty commands.

It’s just like teaching emotion identification—we have to name it to tame it! 🧠

If you’re currently hiding in the bathroom while your toddler has their fourth accident of the day… this one is for you. 🚽

We’ve been told that potty training should be a “3-day miracle” or it’s a failure. But my guest this week, pediatric OT Annie Close, is here to remind us that potty training is a complex motor skill—just like riding a bike. 🚲

It’s not about a deadline; it’s about a learning process. It requires:

1️⃣ A child whose body is physically ready.
2️⃣ A parent who has the emotional capacity to teach.

If you’re feeling the pressure of a preschool deadline or social media “methods,” take a deep breath. You aren’t failing, and neither is your child.

In my practice, we prioritize the “Inside-Out” approach. This means we don’t just try to manage a child’s behavior; we look for the physiological reasons why a child might be struggling.

If a child’s body is in a state of physical distress, their behavior will reflect that. To provide a true Secure Base, we must rule out biological factors. Here are 4 potentially unexpected specialists I refer clients to!

1. Pelvic Floor Therapy. 🚽 If a child is struggling with chronic constipation or bowel and bladder accidents, it creates a state of internal physiological stress. This often leads to toilet resistance, shame, and emotional dysregulation. We have to address the physical discomfort before we can expect behavioral change.

2. Myofunctional Therapy. 💤 I look for signs of snoring, mouth breathing, or prolonged thumb sucking. These are often indicators of poor sleep quality and compromised airways. The clinical reality is that sleep deprivation can mimic ADHD symptoms almost perfectly. We need to ensure the brain is rested before we can assess for neurodivergence.

3. Gut Health. 🍏 We know the gut is the ‘second brain.’ Chronic inflammation or an imbalanced microbiome can keep a child’s nervous system in a state of ‘high-alert.’ If the body is inflamed, emotional regulation becomes significantly more difficult, regardless of the coping skills we teach.

4. Functional Vision Testing. 👓 It sounds simple, but it’s often overlooked: a child cannot learn to read if they cannot see the words clearly. When a child struggles to track or focus, they often experience frustration and behavioral ‘shutdown.’ A standard school screening isn’t always enough to rule this out.

When we anchor the body, we give the child the best possible chance to return to a state of connection and growth.

✨postpartum days are a wave of all the things: diaper changes, feeds, sleepless nights, cuddles, tears, excitement. It’s also no short on feelings of extreme love and loneliness.

Along with the team at @ownyourpelvichealth and @ownyourpelvichealth_kids, we believe postpartum should be an opportunity to build community and walk through motherhood together with intention. Together we’ve created a series for babies and mamas 0-6 months to come together and spend some time navigating all of the questions, highs, and lows.

This 8 week series starts in April and will take place on Fridays from 10a-12pm a in the OWN Your Pelvic Health clinic in the community room. We cannot wait to see you!

Got to visit our friends @ownyourpelvichealth and @milkacademyco today in their gorgeous space!

Would you believe that mouth tension (sometimes ties) and dysfunction has an impact on pelvic health in both adults and kids?? And vice versa???

Constipation, incontinence, can’t jump on a trampoline, pregnancy, postpartum, and even kiddos have these issues! Plus serving IBCLC feeding support. This crew over here is amazing!

🎉 I have an announcement to make….

The Milk Academy is going to be joining forces with the incredible team at OWN Your Pelvic Health inside their gorgeous new clinic space in the Berkeley Denver area on 38th ave. @ownyourpelvichealth @ownyourpelvichealth_kids

Courtney and Annie provide Occupational therapy and pelvic health for women and children and have nested their practice to supporting and empowering the postpartum period. It is such a delight to be able to tuck into a cozy space with providers who share the same vision and I am thrilled to be able to provide services for families inside the clinic. It was an easy YES when they reached out. What a dream!

I’ll now be seeing clients in the office starting May 1st. You can book your appointment on my website!

I will still be offering home visits on a limited basis - primarily for babies less than 2 weeks old for their first visit.

Come visit and say hi!
