Sujith Sudharkaran is another participating artist in the exhibition “The Presence in the Absence” presented by Gallery ONKAF at One New Street Gallery, Herne Bay. Through meticulous graphite drawings, Sudharkaran explores the fragile relationship between humans and the non-human world. Animals, human-made objects and altered landscapes come together in symbolic encounters that question our contradictory relationship with nature, like our desire to protect biodiversity while simultaneously reshaping the environments in which other species exist.
Consistent with the idea of the presence and the absence, these monochromatic works invite a quiet contemplation of what is disappearing, what is transformed and what continues to endure. The animals become more than subjects; they embody the presence of a living world increasingly shaped by human intervention, urging us to reconsider our place within nature and the ethical responsibilities of coexistence.

Gallery ONKAF’s recent exhibition “The Presence in the Absence” presented at One New Street Gallery, Herne Bay includes the works of Suchita Manale - one of the six participating artists. Suchita’s artistic practice centres on the body, drawing from her engagement with performance art. In her work, solitude becomes a space of profound presence rather than absence. Through an intimate engagement with nature, she transforms silence, memory and personal experience into a process of introspection and creation. Soil, grass, thread and her body become conduits through which the boundaries between self and environment begin to dissolve. Within the concept of “The Presence in the Absence”, her practice reveals how withdrawal from the external world can open an inward space where nature, memory and the self converge, giving form to what remains unseen yet deeply present.

Milan Sharma is one of the participating artists in Gallery ONKAF’s exhibition “The presence in the absence” presented at One New Street Gallery, Herne Bay. Rooted in the landscapes of Panchari and Udhampur, Milan’s artistic practice emerges from the deep reservoir of childhood memories, local rituals, beliefs, folklore, and the visual culture of her surroundings. The impressions of these early experiences remain embedded within her imagination, resurfacing as fragments of memory, symbolic forms, and imagined narratives.
Milan’s work resonates with the idea that what appears absent may continue to exist through memory. Childhood experiences, cultural traditions, and places left behind remain present within the artist’s inner world, even when they are no longer physically accessible. Her paintings become spaces where these traces of the past return - not as literal recollections, but as sensations, fragments, and visual echoes. Through this interplay of memory and imagination, Milan invites us to look beyond the visible and encounter the enduring presence of what is no longer physically there.

As one of the participating artists in the exhibition “The presence in the absence” presented by Gallery ONKAF at One New Street Gallery, Mahendra Singh Baoni’s paintings reflect on the symbolic and conceptual dimensions of forts, palaces and heritage sites, revealing how these spaces mediate the intersections of memory, heritage, power, and contemporary experience. His practice draws deeply from the rich cultural landscape of India, particularly the architectural and historical heritage of Central India. These places become more than subjects of observation, Mahendra transforms them into a personal visual language. His works explore the traces that remain within us - of places once visited, histories encountered and memories that persist long after the physical presence has faded. Through the interplay of architectural and human forms, nature, colour, line and texture, he creates layered compositions in which past experiences quietly resurface in the present.

Among the participating artists in the ongoing Gallery ONKAF’s exhibition, “The presence in the absence”, at One New Street Gallery, Balagopalan Bethur brings a distinctive artistic voice. His practice explores stories that exist beyond the boundaries of official history - voices and narratives that have been forgotten, neglected or silenced. His work invites us to consider what remains when something is no longer fully visible, such as the memory of what has disappeared, the voices that persist through silence, and the histories that continue to resurface in the present. Through a layered visual language, he reflects on resilience and the fragile traces of disappearance.
Exhibition continues until 30th July, 2026

Anil Thambai is one of the participating artists in Gallery ONKAF’s ongoing exhibition “The presence in the absence” at One New Street Gallery, Herne Bay. Rooted in the villages of Gujarat, India, his paper works explore the relationship between vernacular and modern architecture, reflecting changing social, cultural and emotional realities.
His architectural forms are not merely structures but carriers of memory, history, and lived experience. While vernacular architecture evokes collective identity, belonging, and continuity, modern structures suggest individuality, distance, and changing aspirations. Between these forms emerges a quiet tension between “presence and absence”.
Solitary buildings and the presence of dots evoke silence, solitude, memory and the traces of what remains. His works invite us to look beyond architecture as a physical space and to encounter the memories, emotions and unseen stories held within it.
Exhibition is on view until 30th July 2026.

What a wonderful opening at One New Street Gallery in Herne Bay, UK!
We had the pleasure of unveiling The Presence in the Absence, a compelling group exhibition featuring six artists: Anil Thambal, Milan Sharma, Balagopalan Bethur, Suchita Manale, Mahendra Singh Baoni, and Sujith Sudharkaran. The exhibition opened on Saturday, 25 July 2026, conceptualized by Neha Pandey.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the exhibition opening. The exhibition received an overwhelming response from visitors, who deeply appreciated the thoughtful curation and the engaging body of work. Their appreciation and insightful conversations made the occasion truly memorable. Each artwork in the exhibition stands not only as an individual expression but also as part of a larger narrative shaped by time, personal journeys and external influences. The conversations and reflections sparked by the exhibition made the opening especially meaningful, as the works collectively explore how a sense of self is shaped through the complexities of experience and memory. Together, they set a thoughtful and engaging tone for the exhibition ahead.
The exhibition will remain open until 30 July, 2026. We warmly invite you to visit and experience “The Presence in the Absence”.

Gallery ONKAF cordially invites you to the opening of a group exhibition, “The Presence in the Absence,” at One New Street Gallery, Herne Bay, United Kingdom, on 25th July 2026. This exhibition features works of six artists from India, bringing together the distinctive practices of Anil Thambai, Milan Sharma, Balagopalan Bethur, Suchita Manale, Mahendra Singh Baoni and Sujith Sudharkaran.
Across a range of mediums and styles, this exhibition is conceptualized by Ms. Neha Pandey which reveals both the contrasts and connections of the presence in the absence where ideas evolve, identities are continually reimagined and a sense of self begins to take shape through what is missing, unseen or unspoken. It becomes a condition where absence does not signify emptiness but creates the possibility for reflection and development of new a perspective. This approach has enabled these artists to reinterpret societal constraints and cultural-political issues, allowing external influences to be examined and expressed on their own terms. Rather than simply accepting these influences, they have transformed absence into a form of embodiment, resistance, as well as belonging.

Exhibition Dates: 25th July - 30th July 2026
Time: 11:00 AM - 05:00 PM
Venue: One New Street Gallery 1 New St, Herne Bay CT6 5AH, United Kingdom

Into the Grotto
By Shivangi Jalan

Body parts intertwined in a messy pile, a sharp object that suggests threat within a scene of domestic calm, mutant versions of iconic advertising images, and sexually charged children’s shows are some of the themes that inform the works put together for the “Slow Rot” exhibition at Delhi’s Method Gallery. This review looks at how Dhruvi Jain, Tithi Das, Mitali Das, Riya Chandwani, M. Imran Ahamed, Sajid Wajid Shaikh, Priyesh Trivedi, Milan Sharma, Revant Dasgupta and Aditya Dhabha creatively engage with the concept of the “grotesque” that keeps seeping into our everyday world to unfamiliarize it.
