“Who has taught you the most about what love looks like?”

Last night, after a long day of school, homework, football practice for one, and a football game for another, we sat down to dinner as a family. No matter the chaos of our day, sitting together, even for a few minutes, is important. I asked the kids, “Who has taught you the most about love in your life? Who is your greatest example of what love looks like?” I hoped they would say us, but I wanted to hear about others they are learning from.

Their answers were so sweet and sincere. As they mentioned different people, I noticed a theme. They aren’t always the people that live the closest to us. They aren’t always the ones verbally saying, “I love you” the most. They are the people that show up for them. The ones that KNOW them because they are invested in their lives.

The names they listed were the people that they look for in the stands at their games.
Who call and ask how their band concert went.
Who don’t need a formal invitation to spend time with us.
Who know their current joys and struggles.
Their biggest cheerleaders and advocates.

Love comes in many forms, from loud cheers on the sidelines, to showing up and being willing to sit quietly in the hard moments. In this season, I’m not always the best at having the capacity to give more of my time to others, but listening to them was a reminder of why it is important to show up for your people.

As my kids grow up and build relationships with others, I hope they remember the examples they have had in their lives and how they can say “I love you” in many different ways.

One phrase we hear often about Miles’s limb difference is, “I’m sorry he’s missing his hand”. Even this weekend, someone stopped him in the grocery store to tell him they were sorry about him missing his hand. I know sometimes comments like these are someone trying to connect. But let me tell you, Miles isn’t missing anything. He isn’t missing the opportunity to live life to the fullest, to try new things, to challenge himself, to change the narrative of what living with a limb difference looks like. However, it’s the people that say that comment that make me wonder if they may be the one missing something. Missing out on the chance to recognize that no matter how someone moves or processes the world around them, they are capable of amazing things too. Please don’t be sorry, be open to see the beauty in being unique!

This past week was full of football for both boys (Ryder hitting a record high 4 touchdowns in 1 game!), @miles_platt last cross country meet of the season, celebrating @stuplatt and I’s anniversary, and cousin time!

What a weekend!!

We had no idea what to expect going into the first ever @texasfoodchampionship and while there is definitely some room for improvement, we can't even imagine the undertaking this huge event was! Props to Matt and everyone else who pulled this together!

And thank you to all the customers and chefs who came and supported our booth. We met so many really incredible people this weekend and our hearts are still so full!

Next year, we want to see microgreens in the hands of every single chef 🌱🙌

What a weekend! @miles_platt is walking away with 2nd place in the @texasfoodchampionship and a golden ticket to cook in the @worldfoodchampionships !! He decided to defer to next year since it is in a few weeks and wants some more time to plan his dish. But he is so excited to represent Texas in 2027!
This kid spent his week doing football, cross-country meet, his honor band is preparing to play with the Army band next week and in the midst of all of that, he beautifully planned, practiced and executed this dish! Right before they called out the results, I reminded him we are proud either way. He came wanting to have fun and challenge himself and he did just that!
Congrats to all of the chefs that poured so much of their heart into their dishes. Including our @masterchefjunior friend @thelilgringa who walked away with 1st! These two have cooked agaist each other for years and we are so proud of her! And two of the chefs, that have taught Miles over the years at @surlatable were also here competing and walked away with 2nd in dessert and are also going to Worlds! They have not only taught Miles over the years, but have become friends that truly have taught Miles so much.
For those interested in what Miles made. He made a pan-seared lamb chop with a dijon reduction sauce, potato fondant on a creamy pea puree topped with a parmesan crisp!

Proud of these boys for running hard in this heat and not giving up! Ryder made his new intermediate school’s cross-country team and was able to run before the middle school meet that @miles_platt was running in! Our schedule is wild with both of them doing football and cross-country, but we are in the good ole days and I’m LOVING it! Great job Platt boys🏃

My new favorite number is #16 because it’s the number of one of my all-time favorite people @miles_platt 🏈 Today was Miles’s first-ever football game! Miles is always up for trying new things and I learned a long time ago that he will work his hardest at whatever he puts his mind to! He walks in knowing people may doubt him, but he is there to prove himself! When he decided last spring he wanted to try out for his school’s football team, he started to prepare right away. He did football camp. He did conditioning with Ryder’s football coach all summer. He kept working out for months to be ready for today. He has learned a lot, and is still learning a lot, but watching him tonight on that field made me so proud of the work he put in to get here! Go #16 and go Warhawks!!

It’s almost time for the @texasfoodchampionship and I can’t wait to see some incredible chefs, including these guys.

For @miles_platt’s birthday fundraiser in 2023, he wanted to donate to his elementary school for his final year there. We talked about looking around the school and noticing something that could improve. Something that would impact others long after he had graduated. He talked about playing at recess at the same time as the Life Skills class. Many students were wheelchair users or had limited mobility. He noticed they didn’t have a ramp to the playground. Even if they did, the playground had wood chips, which would have been really difficult for them to navigate. He decided to put his birthday fundraiser to create a more inclusive playground for his school. It was a big goal 😅 That summer, a ramp and squishy ground were installed at their school 🙌🏻

Flash forward to yesterday, 3.5 years later.

It was the first day of school! Both Miles, and his brother Ryder, have already graduated for their elementary school, but their sister is in 1st grade. I was waiting to pick her, and a few friends up from school. One of those friends is in the Life Skills class. While I was waiting for him, I met a new mom to the school! It was her daughter’s first day of Kindergarten! She also has a 4th grader at another local elementary school, but they were rezoned this year. Her family discussed grandfathering her kindergarten daughter into the other elementary school, but they decided on our school for one major reason.

The playground.

Her daughter is a wheelchair and walker user. They looked at the different playgrounds and noticed how her daughter would be able to access and play on this playground with her friends. *cue the tears in my eyes*

I smiled, “That was because of my kids and so many that helped them reach their goal!” Hundreds of people helped make their playground more inclusive. Years later, that playground shows others, YOU BELONG HERE.

I hope every school, community, and church one day becomes a place that shows every kid they belong there!

Thank you, again, to everyone who donated so many years ago! You made a big impact, and a new kindergartner, is so excited to be to be welcomed to play with her new friends 🥹

Every year we ask the kids one or two words that want to focus on this school year. Also, if they could pick a walk-up song to play as they enter the building, what would it be.
Miles starts 8th grade! We cheated and took his picture yesterday because this morning he was already at his first football practice before the sun was even up! Miles picked the word CONSISTENCY and learning the art of rest. Miles likes to stay busy and try everything (and our schedule shows it!), but this year he wants to make sure he allows time to relax and refuel too. Miles’s walk-up song was “Upside Down & Inside Out” by @okgo.

We are praying for our kids to be a light, faithful friend and hard worker to the kids they will come into contact with, and the wonderful teachers and staff that will pour into them this year!
