Here it is… our final night! Featuring not one, not two, but THREE of Pōneke’s premier acts to close our 2026 series out.

@dillonjomusic is the genre defying project of Wellington Based artists Betty Smith and Georgie Levien. Dillon Jo built paths between the elements of dream pop, shoegaze, folk, alt rock, and indie pop to create their genre defying sound. Having recently recruited Kahu Sanson-Burnett and Ruadh Munro, Dillon Jo has transformed their live sets into an unbridled big-sound shoegaze experience.

@milescalder released his solo debut album Autopilot Life in 2021, a self-reflective delve into waking up from an unexamined life, dressed in a psychedelic folk-rock palette that evoked late-era Beatles as much as contemporaries like Kevin Morby and Father John Misty. The album won over new fans and critics alike & led to a nomination for a prestigious Aotearoa Music Award (Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa | Best Folk Artist 2022).

@_kkeira writes raw and messy music for alien listeners. Joined onstage by some familiar Pōneke talent, his earnest earworms pack more punch than ever. Themes of queerness, growing pains, love, and nostalgia shine through his lyricism and captivates audiences.

2025 in 20 photos.

A giant thanks to all of the remarkable people I worked with this year. There are more photos and some brief thoughts on my new blog post on my website. I’m using socials a bit less these days, but you can sign up to my newsletter for occasional deeper dives, relevant news and thoughts - which is my preferred way to share work. It feels more like a photo book or something, which I like. Link in my bio.

Special thanks to my wife Libby for the support, Chris at @reverie_nzl, Jim and Kim, the @milescalder and @louistm bands, the @welljazzfest crew, the @worldofwearableart crew, all of the venues hosting live music, @lucyliphotography, @_lou__photography_____________ , @alexanders_art_agency and likely a bunch more I’m missing right now.

There are lots of clever people out there making great art and products under tricky conditions. Let’s all support them as best we can.

Love and gratitude,
NG

PA2022

A month from opening this event, our government announced that we would be going to an ‘orange’ level in the new COVID management traffic-light system. This impacted many events across the country, but fortunately The Performance Arcade was in a unique position to stay open, due to the outdoor nature of the event, and way that audiences pass through in small groups rather than gathering in large numbers. With support from Manatu Tāonga we were able to pivot and provide a totally safe event: fencing off two zones and limiting access to 90 people at a time in each. We also ran a two-week live stream of the event ‘Arcade TV’ with the incredible work of Brianne Kerr and her marketing team. Then, ironically the ‘Freedom’ convoy arrived in town. Most of them stayed on parliament grounds, but others stayed in RVs next door to the Arcade. Just like in PA2011, politics and art collided in public space.

Highlights:
1. Arcade TV reaching audiences around Aotearoa and the world.
2. Warren Maxwell and his musical log.
3. Katie Shaw’s performance work ‘Club’ using the whole Live Music Series space.

Images:

2. ‘Regeneration’ Knot Theatre
3. Special Guest Artist Warren Maxwell performing with his log ‘koro’ on opening night.
4. ‘The Oracle 2.0’ Erica Sklenars – projected onto Te Papa
5. ‘Divine Estate’ Oli Mathiesen
6. PA2022 signage
7. PA2022 spatial design by Amber Strain
8. ‘3R Performative Art Residency’ Janaina Moraes, Joanna Cook, Adam Ben-Dror
