The Trumpet Summit in Honor of Roy Hargrove was epic! The visionary, Rev. Millard Southern, had a big dream for this event and handpicked an all-star lineup of trumpeters: Maurice Brown, Freddie Hendrix, Ashlin Parker, Corey Wilkes and the legendary Jon Faddis! The rhythm section featured Matthew Fries, Carlo De Rosa and Keith Hall, and WMU trumpet alum Jesse Lemons was invited to the stage to join the celebration.

The event was hosted by WMU Jazz Studies, and spear-headed by jazz trumpet professor Scott Cowan. Logistical producers Jen Yanchula and Keith Hall were supported by many WMU Jazz students who generously volunteered all day! Thanks to Kevin West, Michael Flynn, Rowan Garcelon, and the concerts office, as well as Dr. Carter Rice and his audio team. Thanks to Sam Ephland for the slick poster design, Kris Walker for the beautiful photographs, and as always, Cara Lieurance at WMUK for the fun interview.

Classes during the day included an improvisation workshop by Ashlin Parker and Corey Wilkes, a trumpet class by Jon Faddis, and a video presentation by Rev. Millard Southern about the life and music of Roy Hargrove. Two student combos, Northview High School directed by Greg Wells and WMU’s Quantum Committee, received valuable feedback from the artists. Through a collaboration with WMU trumpet professors Scott Thornburg and Bob White, we even had a masterclass with Chicago Symphony’s principal trumpeter John Hagstrom!

We are incredibly grateful to have this event generously sponsored by the JOHN STITES jazz awards. John’s legacy continues to make an impact by supporting significant jazz events in our community.

The first annual Roy Hargrove Jazz Camp 🔥🔥🔥

From May 27–31 at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center in Dallas over 30 young musicians had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Roy’s music. Under the guidance of legendary bandleader Dean Hill - the very mentor who taught Roy when he was a kid - and supported by an outstanding team of instructors and guest teachers, the camp focused on everything from music theory to professional musicianship to the heart and soul required to truly play this music. And these students came to play! They brought their passion and dedication every day - capping off the week with an inspiring student concert, featuring pieces they had worked on - including Roy’s iconic Strasbourg/St. Denis and Brisket.

We’re excited for this to be just the beginning. The goal is to make the camp an annual tradition and to offer ongoing learning opportunities throughout the year, empowering students to keep growing as musicians.

Thank you to all the students who participated and the instructors and guest lecturers for sharing their craft.

Special thanks to Millard Southern and Mr. Dean Hill for making this camp possible! 🙏

And to Jerry Walker @jwalkdfw for capturing these special moments in a beautiful highlight reel
