POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Baby is such a powerful and thought-provoking play that explores the harsh realities of the life of a young woman in search of love, safety and a sense of belonging. It’s the kind of play that you have to sit with for a little while 🎭

We meet ‘Baby’ and find out pretty much straight away that she hasn’t had it easy at all. We find out about her difficult upbringing with her Mum, abuse she suffered and witnessed, her imprisonment, then there’s Baby Bliss who she gave birth to whilst in prison. What unfolds is this heartbreaking and compelling story on one woman’s determination to find happiness despite it all.

The play examines themes of trauma, neglect, identity, motherhood as well as the impact of a society that often fails the most vulnerable of people. The content warnings as well as audience care and wellbeing resources were touching and needed; really reinforcing the intensity of the themes being depicted.

Pearl Mackie is incredible in this one woman play, she has such a striking and commanding presence 👏🏾 Her character is incredibly complex but ultimately you can’t help but empathise with Baby’s pain and recognise how her experiences have shaped her and the impact it has had. Baby really takes you on a journey and not a very pleasant one at times, but one that is raw and honest. There are people like Baby all over the country whose childhood is the start of a life of despair and hardship, as well as the effect of the institutions they end up in. This left me thinking about the lack of support and protection for people like Baby and what changes are needed.

Baby is a harrowing but important play that poses questions about society’s compassion, responsibility and justice. My key takeaway for this play is the reminder to look beyond stereotypes and recognise the humanity of people whose lives are shaped by circumstances beyond their control ❤️

This one gets four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Baby is playing at @brxhousetheatre until Saturday 31st October.

Baby Theatre Review: Pearl Mackie Shines in Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s Powerful New Play!

Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s new play BABY at Brixton House is an absolute masterclass in storytelling. Co-produced with Clean Break, this provocative solo show stars Pearl Mackie in a mesmerising performance as a young mother fighting to survive and rebuild her life after time behind bars. It is compassionate, deeply moving, and impossible to look away from. A must-watch piece of contemporary British theatre! Have you seen it yet? Drop your thoughts below!

Still reflecting on our evening with @colorsxstudios.

We teamed up with @colorsxstudios, taking over Copeland Gallery for their opening night of TONES of London at @copelandparkse, celebrating the energy and creativity of the UK’s South Asian music scene.

From intimate moments to the whole room in motion, Amrit Kaur, Mya Mehmi, Petit Oiseau and Ray Laurél had the crowd locked in all night, with Mahnoor [@140bpmahns] on hosting and DJing duties.

Thanks to everyone who came through and spent the night with us ⭐
