Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer is almost here. Yesterday I described myself as, “emotionally ready for pumpkin spice season.”

Daytime temps are hot but low 70s at night have us reaching for a wrap. We’re still loving our red, white, and blue - but getting ready for rusty red, deep orange, and mustard yellow.

For now, we’re savoring the final tomatoes of the season, cracking crabs at family gatherings, and getting our shucking skills in check for fall feasts to come.

Cheers to the last August weekend! We’ll see you in the shops!

Behind the cover. This @thecottagejournal cover came to life in my back yard back in the spring. I told @bluegrassrefinery I wanted him to style the cover and he could use whatever he could find at my house to create it with. We would use one of my barnwood tables and use dried hydrangeas as the palette. He showed up with linens from @pomegranate_inc and we mixed those with my @les_indiennes napkins. The pumpkins I had grown the year before, the gourds I likely grew in high school. The hydrangeas were from my yard and the bittersweet came from @earthangelsstudios’ side yard. The big crock is my favorite piece I own from @millstreamhome. The speckled mugs are @dearsirmadam from @martonanddavis and the other mugs, along with the pottery pumpkins and plates are by @farmhousepottery. The concrete pumpkins were made by @hortandpott. The cake stand was made by a local and those pecans scattered on the table are from @thepeachtruck. The recipe for the carrot cake is on the final page of the issue. I love the idea that this table came together rather organically with stuff you or I would have at home. I’m such a stickler for handmade that I hope it feels obvious in the photo. Zero HomeGoods finds are to be found.

—— a brisk, sunny August morning, homemade peach baked oatmeal, windows wide open, the sound of my littles happily playing, an iced latte at the ready… a perfectly slow, sweet start to our Friday 😌
